I have had loads of people telling me that they can hardly hear me on the phone when i call them,

Most of the time its when i call someone else on BT or if its a long distance landline.

But BT - Telewest seems ok!

Why is this? Why is 14252 Pay&Call automated line recorded so low as well?

I have told BT but they say they could send an engineer out but if it was to do with my equipment it could cost £64!

I have tried about 4 different phones in the line even direct to the socket. 2 cordless and 2 corded ones.

I have also compared it with Telewest's and the dial tone is only slightly lower than telewests but when you call 1471 for example the sound is much higher on Telewest than BT.

I am really confused by this, I want a working line for calls what should I do?

If you have connected 4 different phones directly to the BT master socket (and just to be really safe, not have anything else connected) then it's going to be really bad luck if it turns out you have 4 dodgy handsets.

Get the BT engineer out!

I don't want to pay £64 though i dont want to take the risk, I think its probably down to the quality of the lines as their years old.

Nothing else connects to the line as the rest of the house use the Telewest one. I do however have a phoneline running upstairs from the main box but i'm not sure it sounds ok sometimes and others it doesnt.

Before you do anything, phone BT and ask the them to increase the 'gain' on your line.

Used to be a regular request when everyone used dialup for the web, it turns up the volume on the line and worked wonders for modem problems.

Phoned them up and it must have redirected me to CS and she was like "Increase the what?" but she put me through to her colleague in Faults and he knew straight away and increased it very helpful and not India for a change

I think i'll stay with BT as I was thinking of cancelling the service because of all the problems.
