Just heard the version of Nerina Pallot's "Sophia" on Radio 2... They've spruced up the song with extra strings and backing-synth stuff...

Anyway - just wanted to say how annoying this was - the original is just her and a piano and a very sparce arrangement - beautiful little song - and they've made it into a "pop" song!

I remember they did the same thing with Damien Rice "Cannonball" and Radio 1 played a "spruced up version" for radio - totally different to the original on the album - which is a million times better...

I've got no problems with radio edits - where they cut out a portion from the end to make a track shorter - but messing with the arrangement is just wrong! ... Plus they never even say it's a Radio-Remix, they just call it by the same title!

Anyway - just wanted to know if anyone else had heard of any similar tracks which were great on the album - but only ever get played on the radio as a "jazzed up pop" version!

It's fairly commonplace. Allot of the time it's for technical reasons, 'EQ' and all that.

Is it? I thought the main reason was to make the sound more 'jivey' and radio friendly. I/e with Mr Rice, they pumped up the beats a bit, surely to make stations like GWR think of playlisting and not just radio2

Yes it's not just a case of pumping up the bass or treble... It's a whole different arrangement/speed of song.

The radio version of "Cannonball" wasn't a bland song like the original on the album.

The single/radio version of Cannonball was just the original with some drums and bass on it, wasn't it? Not the end of the world.
