Yes she's being awful. I've cringed with most of the stuff she's said. But that's the way the character is. She was this way when Mark announced he had HIV, and just about everything else that has happened which has been a bit controversial.

Peggy's a person that's quite set in her ways. Very ignorant, but usually she usually comes round. When she developed cancer. Peggy realised how badly she had treated Mark, and went and apologised to him. Which was quite an emotional thing.

I think once she's realised how she's been, she'll make amends. But if to be honest if I was Billy I wouldn't want Peggy in my life. Maybe he should just cut all ties with the Mitchells, there nothing but grief.

Welcome to the real world. There are people like her and thats why I think its great that Eastenders have at least one character who isnt happy about baby Petal. There would be no real dimension to the story if everything was hunky dory and sugary sweet. It works well with Peggy as she has been like this before with Marks HIV, shes an old ignorant bigot, there are plenty like her around sadly.

It's not nice to watch but it's very true to the character of Peggy.

Sje is just acting like most people who in her age group would react! Some oldies have came round to thinking more open but some are set in their ways.

In Peggy's days, downs babies weren't usually kept.

That's just Peggy - the only person she thinks about is herself. Even Jack said so. She always claims to be just looking out for her family - what a liar. Perhaps it would serve her right if something happened to her and someone acts just like she does.

No she's being absolutely 100% supportive and couldn't do a better job of being kind to her family.

While it is true to the character, soaps always have to have a stereotypical bigot when they do a controversial storyline. I was amazed at the amount of homophobia in Weatherfield when Todd came out even though most people nowadays wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's the same with Peggy & her views on Down's syndrome even though attitudes to disabilities have changed a lot since her day.

Does anyone know if Peggy's stance is going to be a long-term one? Or does she come round eventually?

It's funny though how someone who bangs on about the importance of "family" so much can be so awful towards one of her own because of a disability. Can anyone remember if she was ever funny around Ben because of his partial deafness? Like people have said though she was the same about Mark's HIV, although they became friends after her cancer didn't they? How would Peggy like it if everyone shunned her because of that? Like has already been mentioned Peggy is from a generation who hid people with disabilities away, but that's no excuse for her not to re-educate herself.

Yes, even Barbara Windsor hated reading that Peggy would be like that.

She's playing a blinder. I mean it must be so difficult to speak lines that are so distasteful. But what her character is saying is very realistic (in some circles). I hope she does come round though (even if I have to go and thump her myself )

Well done Barbara Windsor.

He should cut ties with the Mitchells as they are good for nothing.

I like the fact Jack put her in her place about that and other things as well. I felt so happy that scriptwriters and producers gave someone with a backbone to stand to a bigot, like people do in real life. There is a damn God in soaps. Soap characters aren't all losers and/or weak people and nor is the real world.

She is being out of order but, sadly, many people do react like that. My 5 week old niece has Downs Syndrome and I am appaled at the way some 'friends' have acted like she's got 2 heads or something.

It's sad that people still behave like that isn't it? I was friends with a girl with downs at college and some people were downright awful to her, as if they thought it was contagious or something.... it was the same for my ex-boyfriends little sister who also had it. I think also what people don't realise is that there are different levels of severity. My college friend was able to live a relatively normal life whereas my ex's sister needed quite a lot of support.
