I can't say I'm surprised. Everywhere, ever, shags these boring, generic indie boys!

I know, it's like there's a conspiracy to make only the blandest, mediocre artists successful .

That "song" is appalling but the radio seems to be intent on playing it every twenty minutes.

It's a dismal conniving 'lets write a No 1 hit' type song.
And everyone fell for it.
Awful.

Presumably 'The Hoff's new entry at three is on downloads alone so he will be number one next week?

There really is. There's loads of good stuff out here, but RnB and "indie" has taken over. Indie is the new pop, along with RnB. Next we'll get Urbanised-indie music

'Indie' now seems to encompass any band with the word 'The' before their name. But how can 'The' Feeling, 'The' Kooks, 'The' Guillemots, 'The' Killers etc be anything other than pop? It's not like they're really inaccessible to an older generation than the students etc who discovered them first. I reckon all so-called 'indie' bands drift to the mainstream eventually. My prime example, my favourite band of all time 'The' Sundays, but their progress from their first to third albums merely reflected their audience (including me) 'growing up'.

The Boyfriends, Midway State, Red Cortinas.
Three bands supposedly in the same sort of genre as Razorlight.
But with a million times more originality and talent.
Chances of any of them having a number 1 hit???

Although I don't particularly like razorlight I do find myself sub-consciously humming this song.

Agreed, but would say Guillemots have something a bit different and special about them.
Parts of the LP are very bland and poppy but tracks like the 12 minute epic closer move them up to an altogether different league.

"Indie" is just another sub culture. It's meaning has no real significance anymore. It's just the alternative to a chav. Instead of tracksuits and short-back and sides, it's jeans and long hair. "Indie" clubs are the new hang out for the reinvented chav.

Actual "indie" music gets no real look in. Razorlight are so far behind. The stuff they're moaning about has been done thousands of times

That's probably because it's on the radio every ten minutes. Just because it's familiar doesn't mean it's any good.

Well, I think 'Indie' has just become a term for those bands in between pop and rock (not traditional rock but not exactly Westlife either). Americans use the term 'alternative' instead which I don't really like either but I suppose there's got to be something....I find describing/categorizing music a pain in the backside tbh....

You have to categorise music when talking about it, sadly.

Personally, I just like music.

yes - there's plenty of good stuff out there.

but america is still a really good song too IMO.

there does seem to be an element of snobbery in the suggestion that something popular can't be good.

we've been listening to the guillemots since trains to brazil came out ages ago, and are off to see them in a few weeks.

but this time next year, when they have a hit single, will they be similarly chastised?

they are not all "the" something!!

and the topic of this thread is just "razorlight"

to prove it further check out this link to other indie rock bands[note the non-"THE"

Not at all.

It's suggesting that bland, boring, been-done-to-death things can't be good

Some indie bands omit the 'the' bit on purpose I reckon.

(The) Doves
(The) Arctic Monkeys
(The) Arcade Fire
(The) Beta Band
(The) Dirty Pretty Things

Sometimes it's easy to assume that they use 'The', even when they don't.

I thought it was just me and this song. It sounds pretty much same-y as 'In the morning' I believe it is time for them to sit down for the time being.

Are these the same blokes that sang 'wires'?

The recent shift towards indie music is fascinating. It's refreshing to see something fairly decent at Number 1 for a change.

This isn't their best work however, and I have to admit being slightly disappointed with their new album.
