Someone doesn't have to do something in order to criticise it and say what they like. Film critics don't make films but they know what they like. Many of us don't dance but it doesn't mean we can't have our opinion on it.

In fact, this argument violates Ebert's Law: When you ask somebody to try their own hand at something before criticizing other's efforts, you have violated Ebert's Law and lost the argument. Roger Ebert is not a filmmaker, but he knows what he likes and doesn't, and has every right to say so. Similarly, people don't need to be chefs to recognize a good restaurant, or musicians to appreciate a symphony.

Westlife were just a bit embarrassing tonight - they can sing so why mime poorly instead?

BLOOMING HECK, I didn't think that I would start the first hate thread, Tasi will go mad at me, SOOOOOOOO sorry Tasi.

Where should I start, I agree that everyone has there own taste, I am not and never have been a fan of Westlife. I think they are fake and miming on telly twic in the same week, copying the same routine, (they stood up at the same time) so they didn't change the routine to the same viewers, very dull.

However having say a band such as Green Day or The Artic Monkeys would still be just as pointless as Westlife, as although seeing Anton & Erin waltzing to American Idiot would be very amusing. However what is wrong with Jools Holland and his band, or a live Cuban Salsa Band now that would be special.

My main point overall from the start has been the fact that we have to live through celebs selling there tat and using SCD or ITT which espacally on ITT they shoud have more behind the scene interviews with dancers or there partners isn't that the point of the show?

Bewarned the timing of Emma Bunton's Album and her appreance on the show is not a coincident. However if she can dance, she should be able to after the routines of Spice Girls, it will NOT influance my vote for or against her.

However if Claudia wants me to go on her show and mime a song for all you wonderful pink fluffy people you know what - I will. As long as I get to Flog some boiler / household service cover in the process !!!!

Agreed. The only guest I enjoyed last year was Michael Buble, but he fits in well with the ethos of the show and he wasn't promoting anything.

I enjoyed Westlife being there and I've never been a fan.. but their music sounded good on Sat and good tonight (I know they were miming and THAT wa terrible).. I felt that they acted as if the show was no. 1 and that was the reason they were on it... I don't think they showed too much caring/knowledge about the show and it was definitely a publicity thing for them... but hey they looked good! Yes, I'd rahter have seen more of the dancers... more of Brendan... Bill on again.. but I don't think they were wholly bad Quite lovely to look at! hehe

Edit: Or maybe I'm drinking too much?

No.. well.. the first few notes looked mimed to me so I didn't really concentrate on the rest of the song and just assumed it was mimed.

I've sang and played my OWN SONGS in front of many a live audience so do I get the chance to critisize them...

They need to learn how to write their own music and play their own instruments, they were ok back in the day but now they are too old to be what they want to be...

I don't mind them on the main show but if your gonna put music on ITT atleast either do something we can all laugh at or else NOT THE BAND WE HAD TO LISTEN TO ON SATURDAY....

I don't mind Westlife really, they're harmless and look pretty BUT did they have to be on again?

What I object to more is the blatant publicty grabbing they do on X-Factor. Last year all that was heard was 'You Raise Me Up' - now it's 'The Rose' (while Louis was telling then bands which ones had got though). I am willing to bet good money that one of the Acts sings it in the coming weeks...

But on the bright side, when artists are on the main show singing we get to see the pro's. Something I love.

With you on that, Hamlet77! I have a friend who works as a sound engineer and he told me that not only do Westlife not sing live, the recordings of their show have the odd bum note programmed in so that it sounds as if they are singing live. And people pay money to go and see this......

I think what people are forgetting is that the Beeb and Itv don't always permit live performances!! It's not the bands fault it's the decision taken by the producers in advance so it's unfair to slate a perfectly respectable group because they were following orders!!!!!

Another point I'd add is that I've seen Westlife live on 3 occasions and each time they were note perfect!!

But there's a live band on SCD, so why not have Westlife sing live ... the facilities must have been there. Do they ever sing live on television?

I've also seen them on tour ( 2 years running ) and Mark has sang flat every time.
