Songs that mention other artists and/or song titles?
Pirouette

Anyone think of any with obvious or cryptic references to another band or another song in their lyrics? (preferably intentional, not just happening to use a common word that also happens to be a band name/song )

One of my favourites is
Quote:
“here, sitting in my room, with The Replacements and Husker Du, like a rebel without a clue
and the Beatles and the Stones get to hang out with Ramones
and the Pistols shunning fame, as they sing the old refrain
as they always will again, like 29 x the pain

I see starz, and the moon is Big and Black, well there's a full sheer heart attack
but the cheapest trick of all is when I hear that London call
I need something and I need it fast, I need Jason scorching past
I need to feel they feel the same, 'cos when they almost know my name it's like 29 x the pain

kiss my heart, like The Damned did from the start
c'mon make me feel like me, S.L.F. or B.O.C.
give me old, give me new, let me know you feel it too
'cos the sounds that twist and curl, it's a brave new world

I'm up, I could not get down, when I got all my friends around
and I can be there once again, I'm gonna miss Kurt Cobain/So where you hiding Richie, James?
just like 29 x the pain ”

Packet of the biscuit of your choice to anyone who identifies all/or a sufficient amount of the references there

I can think of others, but...anyone else got any?

Surely just Richey James (as he preffered to be called). Everyone knows JDB will be in the pie shop.

Do like the line 'Morrissey and Marr gave me choice'.

i'd agree if there was no comma between richie and james.

JDB's a little more slimline these days...

Its not cryptic but:
'Put Suftan Stevens on and we'll play your favourite song' from Hands Open, Snow Patrol
Only one I can think of!

Six sets smoked on Saturdays
At Barnaby's on State
Countless California calls
We could not stand the wait

We played the pier on Venice beach
The crowd called out for more
Zappa and the Mothers next
We finished with a roar

Jimi was so kind to us
Had us on the tour
We got some education
Like we never got before

Around the world in twenty days
We played most every night
Jet-lag, girls, strange languages
Everyone began to fight

Lowdown at the Caribou
All rumors aside
Was we could never get together
Not unless we tried

Summer with the Beach Boys
We got sand all in our shoes
Made some special music
Everybody sang the blues

Scrapbook - Chicago.

Oops sorry forgot to put that the song is 29 x the Pain and is by The Wildhearts. They supported the Manics on tour in the early days. I'm never sure whether the comma is meant to be there or not though- as mentioned, works either way really

Blow Away (For Bill) form the Never for ever cd by Kate Bush

One of the band told me last night
That music is all that he's got in his life.
So where does it go?
Surely not with his soul.
Will all of his licks and his R'n'B

Blow away?
Blow away
Blow away

Our engineer had a different idea
From people who nearly died but survived,
Feeling no fear of leaving their bodies here,
And went to a room that was soon full of visitors.

Hello Minnie, Moony, Vicious, Vicious, Buddy Holly, Sandy Denny.
Please don't thump me,
Don't bump me,
Don't dump me back there.
Please don't thump me,
Don't bump me,
I want to stay here.

Put out the light, then, put out the light.
Vibes in the sky invite you to dine.**
Dust to dust,
Blow to blow.
Bolan and Moony are heading the show tonight.

Hello Minnie, Moony, ("Bill " [?]), Vicious, Vicious,
Buddy Holly, Sandy Denny.
Please don't thump me,
Don't bump me,
Don't dump me back there.
Please don't thump me,
Don't bump me,
I want to stay here.

"Got searched on the plane, Arabic first name
Disturbed by the fame just like Kurt Cobain
Breath of life, kiss of death, my lips pursed the same
You flirt 'til she came
Nothin' hurt like the pain and torture
Daughters of the dust lookin' for a vein
Something to take in vain like the Lord's name
Put your hands together, got 'em all sayin'
" - Talib Kweli

"One, two, three, four
Rock the whole world like the Rolling Stone tour Raw your wack set is faker than a bomb threat
by a nervous terrorist who's so scared that his palms wet
One, two, three, four
The stuff legends are made of, urban folklore
Like Jim Morrison we break on through
Before I care about your take on me, we take on you

Yo, yo, yo
We bring it straight to your face from the start, yo
Rage Against the Machine, break it apart
Might be over your head, but it's straight from the heart
" - Talib Kweli

"If truth be told, I'd probably be, lryically Talib Kweli" - Jay Z

"To walk through the world by ones self, you can't be
Protected...your trust is in whiskey and weed and
Black Sabbath - It's Goddamn Electric" - Pantera
