thomsons in stock!!!!! although mine has gone back for good

got fed up with mine after five months and on second box, first one went back after a week, i did like the thomson but just to unreliable, freezing, recordings skipping, thought the last update would have cured the major bugs, last straw was epg disappearing and refusal to respond to remote unless rebooted

took it back to argos in ormskirk lancs for a refund and was surprised to see stock still in store, managers special at £99.99 reduced from £149.99 ????

about 6 available on shelfs at pickup point, maybe others in storeroom

could not bring myself to swap like for like

purchased the £99 80gb digihome instead and although only record one i am really impressed with functionality and picture quality, hope it stays reliable, also did an immediate firmware upgrade

regards

It did.

The DHD4000 is basically a fine box. You, and some others, have been very unlucky to get rogue models.

Since 2.3.9, I have had very few minor problems. Also I had not too many, except the known bugs, with 1.7.7.

I have had the box since early 2005 and I am very happy with it.

hope you continue to get trouble free use, you may be right, down to luck of the draw whether you get a dodgey one

Yours sounds like it was a duff one - I suspect a dodgy hard disk. Was it a 'normal' 40GB one?

Most problems are due to improper ventilation. I had my own on top of my amplifier at first and I had all the problems ever described on this forum. I almost returned it after a week of problems until I noticed the vent of my AV amplifier was on top and pumping heat into the vent under the Thomson. I put the 4000 under and its been 2 years now without any problems, since the last update; not a single reboot.
Love the box so much, I bought another from Argos last year and its as stable as the old one...

Don't laugh but mine is seated on on eight double stacked black Lego Bricks thanks to my grandson having some spare,2 in each corner

This gives me around 3.5cm clearance above my satellite box.I have no problems with heat and the fan is set to off in standby.

As uchman says correct ventilation solves a lot of problems

not had one problem or any lost recordings since the last software update, for the money this box is rock solid and in terms of storing the EPG it out performs my Humax 9200T

14 day EPG via the calender plus messages to tell you if a programme you have set in the list changes time of the broadcast

yup mine was a 40gb one and well ventilated, open cabinet on top of a mostlty unused dvd, just unlucky i guess

no luck with the digihome either, boohoo, lost recordings from library, shame really as not a bad box for the money

anyway refunded at argos and odered an inverto at boots for £135 delivered

have read up on the inverto and i know some bugs exist but am i being naive in thinking that the lack of posts on the forums means most people are happy with the unit????

to get the best out of it i have downloaded the unofficial manuel

due to land on monday and cannot wait to give it a play

Let's hope the EPG problem has been fixed by then - Inverto also use 4TV

A lot of the problems people encounter are down to dodgy signals.

The Thomson boxes don't cope very well if they get a corrupt data stream. On a decent aerial they should work fine. Other brands of box work better with dodgy reception.
