Hi,

Im moving in a new property in a few days. As the property has only been finished recently their is no BT line connected so i have had to phone up and arrange an installation. The earliest possible date for installation is 9/11/06. Unfortunatly Cable doesnt cover this area

Im unhappy about moving in and having no phoneline for over 3 weeks, plus I had arranged for Sky to come round and fit a dish next week, but without a live phoneline im going to have to cancel this I think?

Is there any other option out there other than BT? Are BT always fully booked for installations that they cannot arrange one at an earlier date

Nothing you can do.

The sky installer might let you off.

You no longer need a landline to get Sky fitted. They recently waived this requirement.

See if BT have got any cancellations.

If you want to take advantage of Sky Talk your need a BT line, as other suppliers dont let you cps your calls.

It's only ridiculous because because it doesn't suit you. Bt didn't know about your move untill you told them. They can't hold off on booking jobs in the hope that someone might need to moved on a certain day

Why don't you move on Nov 9th instead?

You will be lucky to get anything at all before then unless it is for lifelines.

The engineers are booked absolutely solid.

What you have to remember is that BT Retail, who you place your order through, don't have control of the engineers any longer. The engineers are under the control of BT Openreach and if BT Openreach say there are no appointments available then you just have to swallow as there is nothing further BT Retail can do.

Yep, nothing you can do. Three weeks is a typical timespan.

Don't forget to order Skytalk - only a fiver a month for unlimited landline calls!

On the other problem - think of the line rental you're saving and the peace and quiet you'll have!

£5 per month is OK if you make enough daytime calls to make it worth while.

Maybe you are out during the day, so £5 per month is £5 of wasted money, as for ZERO pounds per month (on top of line rental) you can get free evening and weekend calls with Primus 2 which you can order as soon as you have the BT line activated.

If you do make the odd call here and there during the day you could use 18185 and pay just 4p for the entire call, this means you could make 125 daytime calls in the month before you hit the £5, this also means if you only make a few calls during the daytime (remember evening and weekend are free) then you only pay a few pence, whereas with Sky Talk at £5 per month every month, you are paying for a service when you may not make many or any calls.

Primus daytime rate starts at 08:00 and ends 18:00 (BT/TalkTalk etc is 06:00 - 18:00) so you need to work out do you make 125+ calls per month every month during 08:00 - 18:00, most people don't, so even £5 per month is just wasting money.

Primus Saver 2: www.planet-talk.co.uk/saver (There is NO monthly fee for free evening and weekend calls (Line rental remains with BT)).

18185: www.call18185.co.uk (4p per call to UK landlines, UK mobiles 2p/min weekends & 6p min weekdays, international calls from 0.5p/min and all with NO monthly fee.)

That's interesting. I'm on Option One with BT I only have the line for the Internet and I've made around 3 paid calls this year amounting to less than £1

BT are trying to get everyone to switch from this option by offering reduced line rental on the other options which in itself is bad enough but now if I don't make any calls during the quarter I get charged an extra £5.75

Being charged for not making calls is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard from BT, so I'm now looking to change phone and ISP provider

Sorry, perhaps I have misread the thread but what does your above post mean?

BT don't charge you extra for not making calls.

Unless you are speaking about the caller display service as part of the BT Privacy service where you need to make 6 calls a quarter through the BT service otherwise you are liable to pay the normal £5.25 fee for caller display.

Up untill 1st October 2006 caller display was free regardless of whether you made calls or not, Since that date you'll be charged £5.75 if you don't make 2 chargeable calls per month.

They can dress it up how they want but at the end of the day they are charginging you for not making calls

BT's free Caller Display always required subscribers to make 'some' chargeable calls in each billing period.

They made two mistakes when they started that offer:

(1). Not specifying what 'some' meant;
(2). not 'policing' the requrement.

Later, they realised those errors and set up procedures to correct them.

I find it difficult to construe the requirement to make 2 chargeable calls per month or 6 per quarter (depending upon your billing regime), as a charge for not making calls - if you didn't opt for the 'add on' of Caller Display and didn't make any calls, you wouldn't be charged the £5.25 per quarter!

It's not really of any great concern anyway because I always find I have to make a few 0845 calls each quarter for which I can't find a geographical alternative. Keeping a check online, I can easily add a 1280 prefix to my weekly (evening - 5.5p) call to the Indian Takeaway if necessary.

So free doesn't mean free

I remember being told by a BT operative last year that my bills will be cheaper soon because caller id will be FREE from the next billing quarter. Why would they tell me this if they know I don't make calls but will have to pay for it if unless I do?

The conversation came about because I wanted to move to the light user tariff which they wouldn't allow because I have broadband

If you want to look at it that way, no it doesn't.

BT's (nearly) free Caller Display cost me 33p last quarter (6 evening or weekend calls of less than an hour to UK 01/02 numbers).

I'm happy with that because it's such a useful facility.

I would be too but I don't make calls from my BT line which is why I'm not happy.

So going back to the post from Timboy earlier, my bill for the 3rd quarter of last year gave me a refund for caller display billed in quarter 2 and in advance charges for free caller display the charge was £0.00

I find it strange that they call it free caller display last year but the free bit is now missing on the bill.

Even if you don't agree that I'm being charged [penalised] for not making calls you must understand why I'm annoyed to be paying more each quarter when I'm doing nothing different to what I've done in the whole time that I've had the line from BT

Ok then, your better off with Telewest the line quality is much better and louder. It may be more expensive in terms of call charges but you do get FREE Digital TV with ntl:Telewest's Phone service unlike BT.

Plus better CS

Have to admit the line quality is clearer as well as louder than BT, remembering louder isn't the same as clearer. But the call costs are way too high so the line being clearer isn't enough.

Saying that I use VoIP and the line when calling other VoIP users is extremely clear (and loud) better than TW - TW and even calling VoIP is TW is loud and clear.

I get free starter TV with my broadband without phone line as well as the broadband being discounted, so I'm happy.
