Hi Everyone

I've had a Samsung DVD HR 735 for around a month now with no issues with my old sony CRT tv as I couldn't connect via the the HDMI connection.

I bought a Phillips 32PF9641D LCD TV at the weekend hoping that I could connection via HDMI unfortunetly the phillip TV displays in a rough purple colour when connected via this method from the Samsung, I'm not sure what could be causing this, I had read through manuals etc and searched on the internet but not found anything. could it be the cable that came with the samsung is not very good or the samsung itself (i hope its just a setting i've missed)

Has anyone else had simliar issues any help would be appriecated

thanks in advance

All versions of HDMI are backwards compatible.

does anyone have any experience on setting up either device?

could it be that the upscale of 576p from the player is not compatible with the phillips LCD TV?

I'm going to take the samsung player back to comet and replace with another one to see if it was a fault with HDMI on the player

This is what I thought at first, but looking at the resolutions from an online manual, 576p is supported.

Video formats
Resolution Refresh rate
640 x 480i 1Fh
640 x 480p 2Fh
720 x 576i 1Fh
720 x 576p 2Fh
1280 x 720p 3Fh
1920 x 1080i 2Fh

There is some confusion with this recorder. The manual states it only upscales 576p via HDMI. While some owners confirm it upscales 720p/1080i via HDMI.

Is there anything on this recorder to select other resolutions?

unfortunetly I cannot find anything that manually switches it to other resolutions. when you plug in the HDMI cable it auto goes to 576p (from my player it only upscales to 576p)and you are unable to use any of the other video outputs. I'm really starting to think its a duff HDMI connector on the samsung

looks like I might have got to the bottom of it, it looks like inside the socket its split /cracked. I have returned the device to comet (why did I buy from there?) they have a 28 days policy my player just falls three days over the 28 argghh so they will not replace it,

It needs to be fixed at their service centre. the guy in the shop wasn't sure if the fix would involve a cost or be free, as it cannot be proved that it wasn't broken by me. Its annoying as i never used the socket until I got my new TV.
On 50/50's I reckon there will be a cost.

At the back of the players i noticed that there is a load of movement around the HDMI socket there which makes it a weakness be careful of this. I checked the same generation Samsungs in the shop, they ALL have this weakness. So anyone wishing to get one of these players be aware

Thanks

The Samsung's don't have as much of a weakness as the reliability of the Philips LCD TV's!

General bugs really, such as the freeview locking up or not working correctly, this was in the previous generations though, so, hopefully, they may have sorted it now.

Lovely looking telly though, but, i absolutely cannot see the point in AmbiLight...

Yeah I thought that with AmbiLight, until I was given a demo of a sony and a phillips alongside each other (works best with movies) I've always liked my sony TV's its my first phillips as the demo was awesome

I dont use the freeview built into the TV as I use a iplayer+ and also have sky so I dont know if the freeview is any better (i use the iplayer+ as it has internet access and you can stream mp3's etc)

It's worth noting that firmware on the 32PF9641D can be updated by downloading from the philips website. You copy the new firmware to a memory stick and insert into the USB port on the TV. Job done.

I'm not sure how many TV's offer this facility but it certainly impressed me that any bugs in the firmware do NOT have to be tolerated for the life of the set.

As for the Ambilight... I think thats down to personal preference. The more I use it, the more I like it. Has a "Je ne sais quoi" ..

Backlighting any tv will improve it, you don't have to spend a lot of money doing it either, buy some kitchen cabinet downlights (12v 50w) and put them behind your telly facing upwards..!! Bingo job done..! Not as clever as Ambilight but it works, and for a few extra pence you can get a 12v transformer with a built in dimmer and a set of coloured gels to suit your viewing mood..!!
