Good fights tonight, UFC's heavyweight division is really stacked now.

Shame about Thiago Alves.

Major match pulled from Saturday's UFC 111

By Dave Meltzer

The New Jersey Athletic Control Board today pulled Thiago Alves out of his fight with Jon Fitch, the No. 3 match on Saturday's UFC 111, due to an issue that was discovered yesterday in an MRI of his brain.

Neither his camp nor UFC at the moment know what the issue was, nor the severity. Alves, 26. will have to undergo more extensive testing to determine the severity of the issue, but it would be impossible to get that done and results in time to clear him to fight.

An issue had shown up on his CT Scan taken in Florida before coming to New Jersey, which led to the MRI being done yesterday. All that his camp knows at this point is that the original concern was determined to not be a problem. But the MRI revealed a second image of concern.

Currently, both UFC and Alves' camp are awaiting a full written and visual report regarding the MRI. Verbally both have been told more extensive testing would be needed regarding the second item of concern. Results of additional testing wouldn't be back in time to clear him to fight.

Dana White told TMZ that he was flying Alves to a specialist for further evaluation and said that it is possible this could be career ending. His camp said anything is possible from it being career ending to it being something relatively benign and he'd be cleared to fight soon, but noted under the circumstances that no athletic commission with the issue of timing the way it was would have allowed him to fight on Saturday.

It was determined it was too late to get a new opponent for Fitch. If Alves' situation is not serious, most likely Fitch vs. Alves would be added to a show in the near future. Fitch, who learned of the problem at 10 a.m. Eastern time today, had not been told yet when he would be rescheduled to fight.

Fitch vs. Alves was considered a major match on the show. A victory by Fitch would have made him the top contender at welterweight and put him in line for a shot at the Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy winner. A win by Alves would have likely put him in a similar position should Hardy capture the title, and put him at least closer to a rematch with St. Pierre, who beat him via decision at UFC 100.

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Fabricio Comoes has been moved from the undercard to the main show.

GSP is a strong favourite. Hardy has a punchers chance, but that's about it.

GSP is obviously a strong favourite - but I believe he is not the same fighter he was a couple of years ago

before the Matt Serra defeat he was the best pound for pound fighter in MMA
however in his fights since then he looks far more 'tentative' and no where near as confident as he used to do
I really like GSP but I think Dan Hardy has the tools to cause a huge upset
no way do I see George standing and trading punches with Hardy

so I am going to have a bet on Hardy to win within 2 rounds - maybe a foolish bet but he is a big puncher, if it goes the distance no way do I see Dan winning it

so Dan in 2 rounds - roll on sunday morning

Have to stick with the home team here, otherwise I would be siding with GSP.

Some great fights ahead with the UFC, a lot of really brutal heavyweights appearing, not to mention Paul 'Semtex' Daley.

GSP has fought guys with better striking than him before and he's outstruck them. Also GSP is simply better in every other facet of the game compared to Hardy, that GSP will more than likely take the fight to the ground and neutralise Hardy's striking ability.

That being said, Hardy has a punchers chance.

GSP/Hardy was like watching a cat playing with a mouse for 25 minutes; feel kinda bad for Hardy, there was nothing he could do.

So so show; that Fitch fight was so boring, but on the plus side Carwin/Lesnar will likely be awesome.

Hardy was incredibly cocky and those guys usually don't fair well...

Just like Michael Bisbaine, fighters from the UK come in with little respect and big egos...

GSP is overrated in my book, yes he stopped Dan Hardy from doing anything but he also was completely unable to finish him off and tried with failed arm bars three times....that's all he could do...so GSP is not a complete fighter in my book until he can finish someone and he dominated Hardy the entire fight and could not finish him...

Hardy did not seem prepared for the fight in my opinion and Frank Mir wasn't either...

Frank Mir was training very hard but Shane Carwin likes to knock you out in the first round and Frank was so relaxed and acted like he had no idea Shane was going to try and do that....

Kurt Pellegrino did an entertaining fight and took his opponent off his game...

I agree, Mir is such a slacker. Just watching him stand against the cage with a blank expression on his face, what was he doing dreaming of Lesnar.

Would of been a great fight if he had been bothered, his last two were great.

GSP finished Matt Hughes twice, Matt Serra, Sean Sherk, BJ Penn, Frank Trigg, and destroyed Jon Fitch's face.

I don't know where you got that idea.

Hardy has a lot of heart and most people would've tapped in the situations GSP put in him.

Pleased Mir got beat. Can't say the prospect of Mir vs Lesnar 3 was appealing to Me. Mir got destroyed last time by Lesnar and now after this defeat should hopefully go away. Going to be great to see Lesnar vs Carwin, as thats two big guys who like to pound. Not going to be a jiu jitsu contest at all.

As for Hardy last night, really surprised he didn't get his arm broke by GSP, how he never tappped to the armbar or the kimura amazes me. He was outclassed by GSP the wholefight, but never looked like being Finished.

gutted mir lost, hes my fav fighter and lesnar-mir 3 would have been a grest spectacle

he hit carwin with a nice 1-2/elbow combo but i dont think he was expecting carwin to unleash whilst up against the cage, punches came so fast it was too late

rooted for hardy but what can you say about gsp...boring but effective, someone needs to avoid that shoot!

my boy nate diaz winning was the only consolation for me

ESPN are showing 112 at 5pm on April 10th, according to their current schedule. Surprised they can get away with showing it then.

ESPN don't have a live Premier League game that day and also UFC 112 starts at 9 PM in Abu Dhabi.

The US will have the live PPV at 1 PM ET/10 AM PT (fights at 10 AM here....yes! ) and then it re-airs at 7 PM PT.

Pearson looked really good against Siver last night. He needs finishing instincts though.

Gomi was awful.....and Struve got wrecked. He is 6'11 and doesn't use his size as an advantage and let the Hamburgler kill him.

Caol Uno got destroyed. That's one more Japanese MMA legend finished.

I honestly cant be asked to watch it. it would need me to go back 5 years and imagine that Chuck Liddell and Tito are top fighters in MMA.

I cant put myself through these two old guys working an angle to try and convince me they actually matter in the world of MMA.
