DVD/VCR Combo
Has anyone any experience of these? The Panasonic and Sony both look interesting.
Are there any problems taping from DVD to tape on the same unit? Thanks for any comments. Happy New Year John |

Toshiba SD-22VB
Toshiba one looks okay and is now under £200.00
However the multiregion one is still quite expensive but I imagine now the highstreet shops are selling this player for under £200.00 this price will also reduce. See http://www.home-entertainment.toshib...d?OpenDocument for info. Automan. |

I have had the Toshiba for three weeks now and it is terrific. Haven't tried recording DVDs, though.

Toshiba SD-22VB
I'm 95% sure that I will be purchasing this model this weekend, I did try at my local Comet on Tuesday but the only one left was on show and the salesperson could not find the remote or instructions!
However there are a few left in Eastbourne and Worthing, but no longer on their web site. Does anyone have any more news on the Toshiba SD-22VB before I go the 100% and buy it! Thanks in advance... |

None of these double players will let you copy protected DVDs without modifications. It's part of the DVD licence agreement.

You can't make a copy of most DVD discs - even if you have a DVD/VHS combo. Most DVD's are copy protected by Macrovision which only allows you to view the content on screen - not to record it.
Some people have newer tv's with a 2 way scart, so they can run a signal from their DVD into the tv and back down to a VHS machine. From my experience, even this does not allow recording. The copy protection remains intact. Must be a number of people out there now with DVD/VHS combo machines - i bet a number are surprised they can't record DVD's onto VHS. |

Ironically, according to Barry Fox in Personal Computer World Magazine, you can often copy from a DVD player to a domestic DVD recorder! seems almost unlikely to to be true but apparently not all DVD recorders adhere to exactly the same copy protection specs and so certain machines ignore any copy protection signals and merrily allow you to record... of course technically you'd be doing an analogue copy (DVD scart output into DVDrecorder scart input)....
It's something to do with flagging signals inserted into line23 of the signal.... I'll have to re-read the article.... |
