Surprises (No surprises)

I know this is a bit late but as much as I was shocked at who Sharon put through (Robert, Dionne and Wheelchair Kerry-if shes going to play the disability card im going to call it-), its pretty much obvious that there is a percieved "winners" group and the rest are there pretty much as collateral to be taken out and to protect these winners.

Some observations

Leona- Yes, shes a good singer but she NEEDED to be bigged up so much on saturday to save her as, as reality TV shows tend to show us, girls go first and she was very similar to the first girl to get booted from X factor. My point is that the judges would have given her praise irrespective of how she performed. I would suggest she is one of the select few winners.

The Unconventionals: Why oh why oh why was the fact that their song didnt work not get picked up by the coaches? Because thats exactly what was meant to happen. Its the same with maria and the conways last year. My theory on that was that they did not expect maria to be as good as she was and her along with Brenda were seen as rivals to shane. Both had to go before they got close to winning. See also JS's song choices in the final. There was a reason why they didnt sing Desperado. Dionne being in the bottom 2 wasnt a surprise either as she was weaker than the other black girl in sharons group and as Mark the coach said- things dont get important until 4 weeks in. They NEED to have weaker acts (or make good acts look weak) to protect who they want in the latter stages. I like Dionne, but she will be gone soon. Why else would they have her "focus" so early on the XTRA factor? The other fodder, like it or not, are 4sure, Robert and Nikkita. Watch this space.

Its pretty apparent that leona, eaton road, ashley (can someone take the orange he has swallowed from his throat) and Ben are seen as potential finalists and must be protected at all costs.

In sum, it does all seem a bit fixed.

Yes, the public vote but the majority ARE influenced with the judges comments. You may ask why i still watch believing this, but thats exactly why I watch it- to see how it works in practice. Gives a much better angle on how it works.

Other observations on the show

-the themes thing is rubbish
- Having lionel ritchie and rod stewart on is just desperation.
-The stage looks terrible and the audience looks tiny
-Kate Thorton gets worse, not better.

Anyway, thats what I think. Anyone agree or disagree?

My thoughts?

With the exception of 2 or 3, these are best set of final contestants I've 'heard' on X-factor.
I think all 3 judges picked pretty much exactly as I would have.
It's going to be a complete mystery each week who's going to get the boot.

I agree that the themes idea is pish, and will cause problems.
I know they've done it on other shows, but I thought the X-Factor was always going to be safe from it.
Imagine what sort of guests/themes they are going to come up with.

Kate would get nailed without hesitation.
By both myself and my girlfriend.

And remember. "Talent" is very much in the ear of the beholder.
It amazes me every year on here that some people think someone is a fantastic singer when it's obvious (to me) he/she isnt. And visa versa.
But it's all very personal.
One man's meat etc.

but crucially the Xfactor is about making money more than anything else. Controversy and stereotypes of singers who are known to draw the cash and viewers will win over any other criteria. The mistakes the judges made last year was to go public for their love of shane so early in the show.

You do have to wonder if these type of shows are governed by similar narratives. For example Shane and Pete BB7 were both seen as winners from the start (nearly)- the question is what is the long term benefit of such selections to shows or is it just an instrumentally profit motive that governs selection?

Well I don't think anyone can help it if the favourites end up as winners, for what it's worth although neither Shayne nor Pete was my personal favourite (JS and Richard for me ) I thought from the start that both were charismatic (Pete more so) and if you like both immediately had the 'X Factor' whatever that is, and I thought both probably deserved to win, given the context and format of the shows.

No-one on X Factor this year strikes me as an obvious front runner in the same way, the best candidates are probably Anthony from ER (but he has to work within a group dynamic) and Ben (who obviously has some charisma but personally rubs me up the wrong way in a way that Shayne never did, I just don't find him likeable)

I would say that Ashley, Leona or ER are likely to have been seen as potential winners. The best acts that should have got through (most of them) were chucked at bootcamp.

My point is that its not about having the 12 BEST singers, but the fact that there needs to be hierarchy from the start and some of those that were put through were lame ducks for the early stages of the show, not because they were the best singers.

This year I was surprised at the following being put through:

Sharon - Kerry and Ben (Ben not a shock as I knew Sharon would put him through). Neither of these, I think are very good at all and don't have any wow factor!

Louis - The Unconventionals and MacDonald Brothers
The Unconventionals I never saw the point in them, I just didn't get them, and as for the MacDonald Brothers I don't know, I don't think they're that good

Simon - Ashley He's gone for what he thinks young girls will like rather than talent!

If Simon was just going for what young girls will like, he would have picked Rudi.

Ah right thanks

I still think Ashley has more of the potential teen vote as he's chilled out and different. You see Rudi's every day, you don't see Ashley's every day, so potentially he has more pull

The Irish one who auditioned when Sharon was AWOL. Louis said yes, Simon said no. Rudi reappeared, with a makeover, to audition at another location when Sharon had returned and got through then.
