Motown or no Motown, the way Leona was styled Saturday was like something out of a cheap and nasty catalogue aimed at the 50+ market. that dress was TERRIBLE. didn't like the straightened hair either, though that may have been a concession to the theme night. she should be wearing young, funky gear, that proclaims she's a young, sexy, dynamic woman !

That's not what Sharon meant!

Sharon said that Leona performed as if she we're an older person, and that she has an amazing voice, but needs to perform as the young person she is.

Leona is 21 and the way the stylists have made her over she looks a lot older than she is.

I agree with Sharon, in that Leona needs to just be herself and use her natural gift and talent to perform, and tyry not to (as Louis said) be another Mariah Carey sound-a-like!

I like Leona, and will be routing for her as well as Ben.

Thanks

What she is wearing has nothing to do with the way she performs though, does it? Unless we're being really nit picky, i agree the dress was extremely untrended lol.

Might have been a bit of tit for tat going on. I remember in XF1 Roberta was styled by SO in almost exactly the same fashion as Leona was and Cowell made almost the same comments about Roberta as SO did about Leona.

actually, as a woman (is this a woman-thing?), i'd say what she wears definitely will affect her performance, because it's affecting how she perceives herself and that will reflect in her actual on-stage performance. if she walked out knowing she looked a total frump and was cacking her pants over audience reception - first LIVE show let's not forget - then her body language, range of movements etc will all be restricted.

Must be a self concious woman thing then.

Have you heard Leona's take on the Minnie Ripperton song 'Loving You' ?

It's on her MySpace site, it's a great version by her...

I would def buy any album she released or single.

Thanks

Perhaps she meant 'Don't try to be Mariah Carey. She's boring and you're too young to get into that rut.'

LOL, If Sharon thinks Mariah Carey is "boring" then she obviously knows absolutely f*** all about music and shouldn't even be an X factor judge.

Sharon, never mentioned Mariah Carey or that she is boring!!!

It was Louis who mentioned Mariah, but did not slate Mariah, just hinted to Leona to be herself and not do what sooo many other young aspiring singers do... copy the likes of Mariah, Whitney and Christina... Leona does not need to do this, she has her own style, and with the right vocal training (yes she needs that to hone her voice) and team behind her, she could be the UKs next biggest female solo artist.

Thanks

Since it was a Motown theme, I thought Leona & Nikita were appropriately styled in the Supremes & The Vandellas fashion.

So Sharon thinking that comment was supposed to have a negative impact was in fact a positive one since Leona & Nikita represented the era, fashion wise quite rightly.

Nikita looked fine to me, and ihave to admit to only hazy knowledge of how the fashions were then, but surely they could have chosen a better dress for her and still have kept it appropriate to the era?

I'm no style expert but if I didn't know any better I'd have guessed that Leona was closer to 30 than 20.

Maybe that's what she meant.

I thought Leona was good although I didn't like the way she was dressed either. I liked her hair though it looked lovely, although it did make her look older

I thought Sharon just meant be yourself. Why do stylists, allways want the young to look older, and the old to look younger.

I agree with Sharon and had already posted very similar remarks. Leona is 21 yrs old, even before the live show she appeared to dress as if she wanted to look like a receptionist of 35-40. She is a difficult cookie to work out and find it hard to imagine what the genre of music would suit her current image. Its not always what you wear, its the way you wear it as we all know.

She is not a sex siren nor is she in the knitting circle but appears trapped somewhere in between.

I am NOT saying she cannot sing, just some image problems that really need sorting quickly.

i think stylists have an awful lot to answer for - sometimes they seem to choose the most awful clothes for someone else, can't imagine why... just look at Trinny and Suzanne? most of the women they style looked better BEFORE they got their hands on them *eek!*

The dress was a disaster she looked like she was going to a wedding. And they need to address her movement too. If she is going to walk about on stage she needs to learn to walk in high heels properly or maybe sort her out some decent choreography, it's not all about the voice nice though that is.
