First Time X-Factor Viewer...Thoughts
I've never watched the X-Factor from start to finish (i.e - the whole series) nor Pop Idol or PopStars the Rivals. As a keen Historical popular culture student I do find the concept interesting..but I'll scrap that and make my points as a viewer.
First of all, the whole show seems to revolve around Cowell, rightly or wrongly. It seems the whole aftermath of a live event involves seeing what Cowell says, hardly any gravitas is placed on Messrs Walsh and Osbourne. And to be fair, he seems to get things right (his wealth would judge so) Secondly, I don't believe this show aims to create a star, nor do I believe anyone watching it actually believes it will. It tends to create reality television at its raw best (sob stories, dying mothers, lifetime experiences etc etc) but the whole concept is set up to make a one off Xmas number one and a possible follow up album/single that will generate as much cash for Cowell and his company. Thirdly, this year, there doesn't seem to be anyone who grabs the eye. Everyone is a stereotypical clone of their respective age group. A group of people who will jump through flaming hoops of fire to get to celebrity status. Its turning into Big Brother in that sense... a bunch of utter fakes trying to create the most colourful OTT characters for a voting public. The culture then turns to certain members of the public clinging to Z-listers with little precocious talent but oversized personalities. But all in all, ruthless entertainment |

I agree with quite a lot of what your saying apart from this being a weak year. In previous years i've had no problems picking who should go for the first 4 or 5 weeks, but this year i think the standard is quite high. I'm holding back judement on Ashley and Ray for the moment...
I mean no-one on Saturday night was that bad for a first show...certinly not in the same league as the Addictiv Ladies |

I don't agree that the participants are stereotypical clones, any more than the people who are actually in the charts are. They are just (most of them) young people with one foot in the door of their dream.
Even in the real music world , its rare that someone comes along who is so outstanding that they take the world by storm, so why would we expect a reality show to produce one? Having said that, I think some of the people on the show this year are extremely good and individual (Eton Road , Leona, Ben, spring to mind) I enjoy the show for what it is - Yes it's largely centered around Simon's opinions, but in the end, even if the best talent does not win the show, if they are any good, they will be picked up by the music industry as in the case of Lemar and Javine. It's great entertainment and many of them do get a career out of it. |
