When do they judge apart from when Kate hurries them up before a commercial break?

Don't they give the contestants some advice as well, before the show? A master-class or something like that?

Other than that I suspect it's all about raising the show's profile & prestige & pulling in 'extra' viewers away from the competition. Let's face it, many people will tune-in to watch the likes of Lionel Ritchie or Rod Stewart who would otherwise not watch a TV talent contest like XF.

If Lional Ritchie did, it was never mentioned.......would have been nice to see some footage if that WAS the case, but I'm not sure it was unfortunatly...

It also would have been nice if he had at least given feedback with the other judges or something of that kind; rather than reading a few silly little comments off a card....

There was scheduled to be a masterclass with lionel ritchie, but he had flu or something, and had to cancel it. I think they were unsure whether he was going to appear at all until the very last minute, which threw his contribution into disarray somewhat. I'll try and find a link to the article I read...

Hopefully Rod will be fighting fit this week and add more to the show.

I agree it would be better if he/she sat with the other judges and gave feedback after each act. Maybe Lionel wasn't up to it with his illness. Or maybe the 3 stooges don't want to be out shone!

Lets see what happens this week.

I thought Lionel Richie would be sitting with the other judges and commenting on the acts as that's what they have done on American Idol - I was looking forward to hearing his comments on each act

What illness does Lionel Richie have? I thought he seemed a bit off colour.

This guest judge is more about an act getting prime Saturday night tv exposure for their material than anything else. Watch - week by week as we approach christmas the appearances will tie in with album releases!!

it was because he was ill and didn't know if he'd even make the live night, then when he did he was obviously still off-colour (no pun intended but make the most of it), pale and sweaty and refusing to kiss anyone, spending most his time backstage.

It is so good to see that the X Factor is taking on the set of American Idol. About time.

Higher celebrity status and far more glamorous set. Bring it on. Shame the singing isn;t as good as American Idol.

In this country unfortunately X Factor/Pop Idol doesn;t have the same appeal as American Idol does in the States. Over there Celebs 'fight' to get on the show and the it is regarded very highly.

They should have let the celebrity judge have a seat on the panel to comment on each act, instead of wasting that time talking to them later.

Rod Stewart and Lionel Richie are hardly a bad place to start. I imagine there will be a huge number trying to get on in the run up to christmas, 9 million "music-minded" viewers watching you, and all you need to do is turn up at the house midweek and then go to a big party on the Saturday night.

Totally agree. Is all about them plugging their new single/concert/album has nothing to do with helping the acts out.

Bunch-of-Arse.

I would expect to see Robbie Williams on as well, its been rumoured in the press, and he's got a new album out soon.
