ALDI VoIP

Renowned for their unbeatable low prices, high street retailer ALDI have recently signed a new deal that will result in them going head to head with Tesco in the field of Internet Telecommunications.

Priced at £9.99, the first installation kits will be appearing in ALDI stores on Thursday 26th October, and come complete with a USB Handset, installation CD-ROM and £5 calling credit.

In a press release, emedia Telecom, contracted service provider of the Tevion Internet Phone, said that they "won the contract to deliver a VoIP solution for Aldi supermarkets, an offer that beats the TESCO INTERNET PHONE deal hands down."

Like its rivals, Tevion Internet Phone will allow free calls to other Tevion Internet Phone users, free voicemail retrieval, and a geographic telephone number.

There are four call plans to choose from, which include pay as you go, Talk Worldwide, Shout Worldwide and Yell for Business.

Yell for business has a monthly cost of £18.95, and comes complete with a dedicated incoming fax line which will send incoming fax messages to your chosen email inbox.

It is not yet known which protocol Tevion/Aldi have chosen to use, but if like Tesco they have chosen IAX, there will be the downside that a computer will need to be online in order to take incoming calls.

If any more information appears elsewhere, I will share it here with you here on digitalspy.

Oh, Aldi, where when I politely asked an assistant manager if there was any chance of another checkout being opened, I was told; "The checkout girl can ask for help if she feels that she cannnot cope. We don't need to speak to anyone else." Nice.

Any idea why these have now gone from the Aldi website?

Either they are a regional offer, or they aren't ready for the system to go live yet. I still haven't seen any signs of a personalised ALDI or Tevion website for the VoIP yet. Either way I think that I'll be giving this one a miss this time, especially after the let down of Tesco Internet Phone running on IAX rather than SIP.
