On Telewest cable, and currently have a line with them, but want to lose it

Not a big user of the phone, but the wife phones Paisley a few times a week (we are in Falkirk) so i guess we do make a few calls a week ..... i also don't want to leave a pc on constantly, so i want one that plugs into a router or modem

I'm thinking Vonage so far, but if anyone has other advice i'd love to hear it ....

BT offer a VOIP service as part of there broadband service and you get the basic free evening and weekend package if you take BT Total Broadband.

You could try any of Voipcheap, Voipstunt, Sipgate. With Sipgate you will get a 'landline number' whereas with Voipcheap etc you don't. There are pros and cons to all the various services, and it really depends on your individual circumstances. Personally I use a combination of all 3

Vonage thoroughly recommended.....Simple and as near to landline as you can get.... As you have Telewest you have no need to pay for the BT line either.

Thanks guys

Looking at last months bill, i only rang up £7 worth of calls, but paid £11 on top of that for the pleasure of having a cable line (which comes in with the same bloody cables as my tv and internet )

So even if it was vonage, i'd half my spending across the year, probably more as i'd be inclined to use the phone more!

...oh, and another question

If i transfer to something like vonage, i know i can get a code in my area (01324) but can i transfer my current number from Telewest, or do i get assigned a new one?

You cannot take Telewest numbers over to VoIP as far as i am aware. They will assign you a new one

Try www.voip.co.uk Uk call pack £19.99 per year for free evening & weekend calls. Peak time calls are 2p for the first hour, then 1p per min. Rock solid service. I've been with them for nearly a year, and the service is miles better than Sipgate (who I was with before).

I've used voip.co.uk myself; its rock solid reliable service is starting to become not so reliable in my opinion! I think they offer a better service than Sipgate, at least they are UK based

I also recommend www.voip.co.uk perfect service, been with them for a couple of months and very good value in my opinion.

Just adding another vote for voip.co.uk!

Reliable service with helpful people if you do need them on the support end. i.e. They'll help trouble shoot your kit to get their service working - compared to the majority of fixed line operators who couldn't care less once they've proved the cable is OK to the house. Very handy when your router makes up some new QoS settings and starts ditching all outgoing traffic

Yes I had a problem with my Zoom X5V router not hanging up calls. It turned out to be a firmware problem. The support guys set up the same router in their office and tried to reproduce the fault. They even managed to get Zoom to give them the latest firmware 2 weeks before it was released to the public after testing it they sent the new firmware to me. I have never experienced such good support from any company.

I concur. It could not have been easier. Just set mine up there now. Finding the old phone psu and snipping the cable ties on my phone cable to move the phone took more time than connecting everything and letting it work.
