This is where old meets new! My son, (16, punk, but eclectic music tastes..) me, Mum to son - old punk.. both got into SLF in our teens ( for me!)
I introduced him to SLF, in much the same way as he introduced me a few years back to Greenday...
My favourite SLF, Suspect Device - which they played in the first encore (should've been the final number imo)..
My sons favourite, Alternative Ulster - the final number on the 2nd encore of the night.
Great turnout, amazing gig - and Jake burns sounded as angry and growly as he did as an angry Belfast boy of old.. great banter with the crowd.
Cool, smallish gig, they only usually do cities, so nice to see them in a town. And as Joe Strummer was living in our town in the last years before he died, and very much a part of the local community - and Joe being a big idol and inspiration to Jake it was very emotional and celebratory of Strummer. Especially when SLF played 'Strummerville' (which, incidently is the name of the charity Joe set up in the town to help local musicians achieve/record/jam).
Me & my son were well impressed! I had visions of diving into the 'pogo pit' to rescue him (all 5'11!) and shouting 'OI! Get off my little boy!' but actually, I think he was probably more concerned at my gusto enjoyment of Suspect Device!
(We have seen The Used, Greenday, twice, Flogging molly, Babyshambles, twice and Taste of Chaos together but this was MY TURF!!)
It led me to thinking of, (and I remarked to my son and heir) how I'd like to see some more of the influential punk groups I was in to... but sadly realised most are no longer - ie The Clash, which he adores.. My favourites were SLF, The Jam, Sex Pistols, X-Ray Spex, The Stranglers, Theatre of Hate, PIL...
So, if you had the use of a time machine, who would you go back and see live?
(Great night SLF, go see if you get chance! )

Am I right in thinking I remember John Peel playing them quite a bit?

He did! Yes, you are correct, in fact they did mention John Peel in tribute, last night! I think he liked the Irish lads!
