I am about to replace my old TV. Comet have a good deal going at the minute for a Philips 32PW9527 pixel plus widescreen TV and LX3000D Dolby 5.1 DVD home cinema kit.

Has anyone got either/both bits of equipment?

Also

1) Does Pixel plus make a BIG difference to the picture quality
2) How does the TV sound transfer to Dolby 5.1?

Thanks in advance

Have to say I'm not a fan of Pixel Plus at all - find it over-rated.

In a 32" right now, I'd go for the Sony FQ80

Pixel Plus makes a very big difference - but not for the better! I personally find it makes the picture too smooth and artificial.

I'd suggest an extended demo before you go for anything other than a standard 50Hz set. Many people (including me) just cannot stand the side effects of 100Hz processing. It seems to be very much love 'em or hate 'em. They look particularly bad on fast moving scenes or scenes with very fine detail.

Just to be a little more positive, I find that it does make a big difference. I have the 36" Phillips set. You really notice the extra lines when the image is still or slow moving. It looks very clear compared with a set without Pixel Plus. However, like all TV's with image enhancement of any kind, things can get hairy with fast moving action. This applies to digital sources, like Sky.

The symptoms are a shimmer arounbd the object that is moving. It can be quite noticeable, with moving objects having no distinct edges.

Sky Tech people actually recommend turning all kinds of picture processing, including Pixel Plus, OFF when watching their broadcasts. Apparently it's something to do with them already being processed in MPEG...I didn't understand the technicalities of the explanation, but having tried it on my brother's 36" widescreen, the picture is MUCH clearer with all the fancy processing turned off.

I've found that's generally true even on analogue transmissions. You can't add what's not there and all that signal processing jiggery pokery just gets in the way.

I have to say that Pixel Plus makes a big difference, and largely for the better. No sooner do you turn the set on for the first time then you are in awe of the picture quality. It really does make a *big* jump from none pixel-plus sets. The fact that you can't add what isn't there is right, but your getting a picture that looks to your eyes and brain sooo much better!

If you put a DVD on the chances are that your also going to get blown away even more. Yes, occasionally you see a person shimmer, but its few and far between and the set more than makes up for it in giving you so much more quality to your eyes. Once you've had the set for a few days, go to a friends who doesn't have pixel-plus and compare that screen to your own, it will seem blurred and out of focus in comparision.

I can't comment on the FQ80 as I've only seen this set in the showrooms and no magazines have bothered to review it yet.

I think this is very much a subjective thing which is why it's best to get a demo first. I work for one of the large manufacturers and have access to all the latest sets, including a Philips Pixel Plus. I've even taken various 100Hz sets home for weekends but I still find I prefer my 50Hz set. True, you can see the lines if you get close and there is some flicker but I find this less objectionable than the various 100Hz effects.

Have to say, on my Sony 32FX65, I've not noticed any downside from 100hz on broadcasts via Sky Digital - not even with sport.

Pixel Plus for me is the best picture I've ever seen. I was always a Sony man till I saw the Philips Pixel Plus TV's.
