How to share HC BB connection wirelessly from a mac and use torrents

Hi

I run the following setup and want to add wireless into this configuration but without losing access to fast torrent downloading which I understand can occur when using torrents over wi-fi.

- Homechoice (with a wired ethernet connection into the mac)
- Imac G5 (pre Intel) with wireless airport card
- Latest update of MacOSX
- Torrent client Azuerus
- Apple Airport base station (1st generation) - available, not currently being used though

I am happy to buy a new wireless router if necessary. The person I want to share the connection with is on a PC laptop.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this, I was thinking I would be able to plug the homechoice into a new wireless router (any suggestions on a cheap, effective solution that will work with a mac and homechoice?), plug the router directly into the mac (so the torrents speed would not be an issue), and then my new user would be able to share wirelessly via the router.

Anyone know if this would work, or if there is a simplier solution with my current configuration? I assume there is not enough ethernet ports on my 1G Aiport base station and the Imac to perfrom the proposed solution with my exisiting equiptment.

Any suggestions greatfully received.

Thanks

I use an iMac G5 off my wireless router (Buffalo) as well as a laptop and sharing my conection with my Sonos system and have never had any download speed issues with Azureus. What have you heard can be an issue with this? There is no technical reason I know of that would affect the download speed of torrents as long as you have a good wireless connection from you computer to the router and as long as you have the necessary ports open for the traffic (for example I believe a number of router generally block the port used by default by Azureus for uploading).

It may have been the port block issue. Is this easy to overwrite, or will some routers just not work torrent downloading?

My general fear with this was a friend that had persistent download speed isues when using homechoice, wireless and torrents.

However if you're saying it should work I will give it a go.

You should be able to open any ports you want on your router, they're only initially shut for security purposes; obviously don't go opening ports all over the place, just the ones Azeus wants (these are configurable to your choice if I remember correctly).
You will also need to forward the port to the computer on your network that you are using Azureus on, that allows the peer - to - peer connection required for the protocol. The instructions on how to do this on your particular router should be in the manual.

easy really,

plug the AP into HC, restart HC,

get the AP to provide DHCP to your Mac,

set up port forwarding on the AP for the required ports for torrents... (can't remember now)

speed is not an issue, you'll never hit anthing like what AP provides via wireless...

I have no idea what torrents are but I think I have a similar query.

I have an Imac G5 with wireless BB connection via an Airport Express connected to the HC unit. I also use the Airport Express to play music from Itunes to my stereo via the wireless connection. Despite the odd need to reset HC, this all works fine. However, my PC laptop doesn't recognise the Airport Express to pick up a BB connection and I have to use the second ethernet connection from the HC unit to get online. When I plug my laptop into the second HC ethernet port, this stops the connection running through Airport Express to the Imac.

Before getting the Airport Express, I used a Dell wireless router, and both Mac and PC could pick up the signal. I then ran into trouble on the Mac using both the Dell router for internet and Airport Express for itunes (don't know why, as it had worked before), so now just use the Airport Express.

On the absis that my priority is to have a good wireless internet and "itunes" connection with the Airport Express (I don't bring the laptop home much), I'd be grateful if somebody could help me out with the following:

- How can I alter my setup so that a PC laptop can access the internet through the Airport Express connected to the HC unit?

- Can I source two BB connections from the HC unit - one via the Airport Express, and one via the second ethernet cable?

Many thanks.

briefly no, the two ports can only be used one at a time and not in conjunction

ok, simple way, set the express to be visible if not already, untick 'closed network' you shouldn't need this but it makes life easier.

then set security on the express to WPA Personal.

check that you are providing b and g networks (don't know what you pc is)

update the express

on the pc, turn on the wireless if required.

you should find the express is now available.

click on the thing in the sys tray to bring up the 'box'

click connect

enter password

job done.

....

i have no issue connecting any mac or pc to my express.

make sure your not using MAC ALCs on the express??? if you are add the MAC address of the PC wiresless.
