Digital Cameras - please help me choose!
Victoria Sponge

Hi guys,

I think it's about time I treated myself to a new digital camera (stills, not camcorder). But with soooo many on the market I just don't know which one to get! This is my criteria:

1) Small, lightweight, sleek design;
2) Optical zoom as well as digital zoom;
3) The usual choice of modes, e.g. macro, monochrome twighlight, etc;
4) Ideally under £200...would strech to £250 if it were a real beauty;
5) Large-ish viewing screen at the back;
6) A well known brand with an excellent reputation would be a bonus.
7) Minimum of 4 mega pixels.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!
Thanks.

I've always liked the look of the olympus mju minis, and i can see a 4, or 5 megapixel model on their website. Link

I use an older Nikon myself but with your budget you could get a VERY good newer one!

http://www.abc-digital-cameras.co.uk...coolpix-s9.htm

Slightly higher resultion, but slightly bulkier ...

Ignore digital zoom at all costs.

Nice camera, and I agree about digital zoom ... pointless.

But ...

That one isn't the smallest.

lol...yeah the sleek, smallness is important cos I wanna be able to pop into my handbag on a night out. I'd like to be able to take it almost anywhere without it being a burdon on my handbag.

The Sony T9 ...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Cyber-s...&s=electronics

... is also in your price range.

TBH, with a £200 limit, there are quite a few nice cameras to choose from. Although, with the Sony, you're stuck with their memory sticks for storage ... which are a tad more expensive than the SD memory the Nikon uses (the Fuji uses XD which is chepaer than Sony but not as cheap as SD).

How freaky is that...I was actually looking at that EXACT page as you posted that link. Same page, same website, same camera! Spooky!

Thanks for letting me know about the memory card situation. I didn't realise you have to use specific Sony ones for Sony cameras.

I went for this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Casio-Silver...&s=electronics when it was £130

I'm very happy with it. you can see some of the pics i've taken with it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/markgodfrey/

I like the way you can take a shot of an old pic and it will enhance the colours in it.

It's been updated to this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...890256?ie=UTF8 so I can't speak for that one.

Canon and Nikon make some pretty decent digital compact cameras, give the jessops website a look, they sometimes have some good deals on.

I've just got a Canon EOS 400D, it's a very good Digital SLR camera, but out of most peoples price ranges. Took me a while to save up for it.

That'd certainly be my recomendation - a great camera to operate with some great results. The IXUS 60 has 1MP less (6 vs 7) but is physically a bit smaller.

These are some smaple photos taken by yours truley with a Canon Ixus 750 - http://flickr.com/photos/86459075@N00/

those photos look great, i'm looking at getting a new camera soon so shall look at the canon ixus range.

I also notice you have a matsui DA-1, i brought one from my currys that was closing down for £20 half price but the reception is very poor. I was expecting an external aerial socket but it didn't, what do you think of it? i was thinking of extending the wire and sticking it outside to get a better reception. i did put the wire onto the centre core of my tv aerial cable expecting some improvement, obviously its not a dab or fm aerial but it gives me perfect fm reception....

I'll PM a response to keep things on track.

Yep, you can get the IXUS 60 for £150 now at Amazon. It's the best camera in its class. Up to £250 notes I'm sure you'll be able to get the next in the series.

I just bought two IXUS 60 camera's, two 512 SD cards next day delivery, only £153, arrived this morning.

A neighbour was looking for a camera I checked one of my usual sources and they had the camera's for £55.38 plus vat, I got him one the other my son will have for Xmas. Made sure I ordered them next day delivery, checked the website an hour later and they were back to £135 + Vat

BTW They are a great looking camera, my neighbour was buying it as a present, at the price we paid he is keeping it for himself.

Pentax is usually pretty reliable eg Optio S60:

1) sleek design
2) 3 x optical zoom
3) really helpful modes with very useful extra ones like 'museum' (where you can't use the flash) and 'sunset', plus a mode which tells you all the different functions of the camera
4) large LCD
5) It's a pentax, so it can't be that bad (especially when it comes to lenses!)
6) 6 MP

The Pentax usability isn't great, and the battery life seems to be poorer than average. I've just always found it a struggle to use.

True it does eat batteries, but so do all digital cameras. I think the usability is great with the smiley-face mode that tells you what all the functions do.

Well both my and my mother's digital camera's were stolen from our house a couple of weeks ago, so I treated myself to an early Christmas pressie: http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/digital/cameras/z3/ and it's gorgeous! It's so small and sleek, I am sure it was designed for women (handbag space is of a premium!). It has a good spec too, of course! Got it from Argos for £170. I bet it'll be cheaper after Christmas but I just couldn't wait!

The smallest ain't going to have a 432mm optical lens which is image stabilised lens though and believe me the little bit extra bulk isn't half worth it. Ultra compact it aint, large pocket or handbag? No problem.
