Do you think Portishead will ever make another album?

..and if they do will it actually be any good?

Their last studio album was in 1997 and every year since then there have been reports of them "recording new material to be released soon" but nothing has ever materialised and, frankly, it's getting silly as they're approaching Guns 'N' Roses status in the time between album releases.

Should they just split up as they can't seem to get it together? Do you even think the whole Portishead sound would work nowadays or do you think it would sound a little contrived and passe due to the world moving on and all those terrible wannabe Portishead groups from the late 90s?

It'll come but I'd like to see them move to a more live sounding feel. The free track they released recently (on their myspace site I think) sounded good.

Ah, i haven't heard that. I'll have a search for it.

I'm not sure about a more "live sounding feel" personally. Well, it depends if they can pull it off i suppose but what i always liked about them was that the music was often spaghetti western or old soundtrack based mixed with live instrumentation, singing and dj-ing. They were one of the few British groups to incorporate sampling and a hip hop influence to create something eerie and sinister yet also really sensual and fresh sounding that wasn't merely a new-agey version of American hip hop with a mumbling stoner trying to rap over the top *cough* Massive Attack and Tricky *cough*.

According to the last post on their Myspace site, on October 18th:

Quote:
“yes we are recording a new album

no we never split up

we are working together everday to write a new record

it will be released on island records

some time next year

in fact as soon as we can write some more tunes that we like

thanks for you time

geoff {P}”

I hope they do another concert with a full orchestra, their NYC live DVD is my favourite all time live concert.

Yeah, that's a great concert and they were mind-blowing the two times i saw them live back in the nineties.

I'll believe they've recorded and are releasing a new album when i her it, which will probably be some Buck Rogers year like 2056.
