Accepted by whom?

or are you implying they have a similar audience?

I'm sure if Chuck D and Flavor Flav started doing badly synchronised dance moves and singing 'jump on my tutu' there would be an out cry too(-too)!!!

And I bet a cursory glance at the lyrics of robbie's new 'rap' album has loads of things that offends some people - mainly people with good music taste

*nods sagely* - I also hear that many of them like to procreate with their own maters!!!

disgustin'

Mart I think you are a brave guy joking like that with so many people on the I-love-clicky-clicky-alert tip

Peace out

Who needs to attempt to discredit rap when rappers do such a good job of it themselves?

rap can be seen as a kind of poetry hence the term 'art form'.

That line is beyond despicable IMO. The man just died in a tragic accident and there is no need to even reference it in that sort of manner.

Accepted by the music industry as a whole.

Do you even need to go as far as reading the lyrics?

All art has good and bad protagonists, yet it remains constant.

I agree with the OP. This is fair game and the norm in hiphop. 9/11, hurricane katrina and much worse stuff have been mentioned straight after the events so I dont see what the big deal is.

Yes, its in poor taste, but Ive heard a million lines far worse than this.

Eminem referenced Christopher Reeve multiple times after his accident and after he died and no one seemed to be up in arms about that.

Well as far as i know Rap has been one of the most popular forms of music on the planet for the last decade.

In the USA it's 2nd only behind classical music for popularity (apparantly)

reference: The Great Rap Revolution--Hip Hop in the White Community." Des Moines, Iowa: Monarch Publishing.

[from an internet search so maybe take that at face value]

People are talking by buying the records - you only have to see the charts around the world to see that.

The music industry accepts that and whether you like it (rap) , get it, understand or appreciate it - it's going to be around and dominant for a very long time.

And for the 'record' if we ever get to a stage where people are allowed to block (censor) what people say then all music will die cos everyone is against something

whether it's his best mate being killed by a sting ray, to robbie williams singing about 'dancing like you're in the special olympics' or innapropriate girl band sexually suggestive lyrics (bought by 12 year olds) to athiests who don't want to hear songs praising god.

The rule is simple if you don't like it don't listen to it - but as mentioned people do like rap music - the people who the music industry are targeting generally do like it,

I would say by this guy complaining about the stingray lyric all he has done is brought attention to the song - more people will want to hear it

Be aware that I'm not being racist. Its just, whats the point in taking the piss out of people who died in their stupid "battles" to insult one another. Its lame.

I'm not sure if it's so much taking the piss out of Irwin or just using it as a pop culture reference, which is very common in hip-hop lyrics. I'd say it's a little soon to be doing so personally.

All the "that rap stuff? It's just them bloody nig-nogs talkin' about automatic weapons and swearin', innit? It's not real music, mate" type comments contained within this thread are hilarious.

^^ Tagline - "Official Steve Irwin Sting Ray Attack Video"

You'd think the Irwin estate would be more angry about videos like the one linked above and all the photoshops which appeared on the 'net the day after (i can't lie - that "Stingray deny all involvement" one with the photoshop of the puppet from the old show Stingray on the screen in the BBC news room did make me chuckle) than some unknown underground rapper like Ras Kass who, as SpankyPlugs rightly points out, is using the Irwin incident as a pop-culture reference. An insensitive pop-culture reference? For sure, but little more than a mere reference when it boils down to it.

The thing that irks me is when someone hears say a 50 Cent track and thinks 'That's crap - therefore ALL rap must be crap too, and about the exact same thing'

Yet if someone was to hear The Feeling's latest mawkfest and decide that the Beatles and the Stones were worthless too, they'd be laughed at.

Totally agree Even more cringeworthy is when they describe it using phrases like "word to your mother" and "no diggity" thinking they are witty and hillarious

Some people seem to think that 50 cent In Da Club was the beginning of hip hop.

Art? Poetry? Please, please, please tell me you're joking.

It qualifies as both an art form and a form of poetry, yes. As can any song lyric potentially.

And whoever this Ras Kass is, he's probably some nobody who doesnt care about the genre of music he is in. Sounds like a complete prick really and they kind of person who brings the good name of hip-hop down a few pegs.

Well, considering people are actively discussing it...

I agree that good rap music is definitely an art form and is a lot more artistic than a lot of other music out at the moment. I remember in my A-Level General Studies exam, one of the questions was to "argue in favour of rap music being a form of art". I gor an A, so must have done it quite well .

Maybe you've just never heard good rap music?

You should check out the new album by Ty, a young British rapper - it's fantastic. The new album from Deltron 3030 promises to be brilliant, too. In the mainstream, listen to Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West - both are amazing lyricists and Kanye has been a truly revolutionary producer for many, many artists. You won't hear any of the gun loving, ho slapping stuff coming from Lupe either...

Apparently not to someone with such a distinct lack of grey matter.

I'd call that a puerile public slanging match but if some idiots choose to call it rap and, far worse, music then let them continue in their delusion.

What strikes me as ludicrous is that this man is under the impression that there is anything about the rest of the track, or the rest of his material for that matter, worth listening to.

Maybe that's because the lyrics of the rest of the track don't affect him or his directly, but then it would take someone with more common sense than the average rapper to realise that obvious little point.

Admitting to violence in hip hop. What a clever move! Nice one, smart boy

And why should anyone on earth care if they want to all shoot each other one by one? All I want to know is why they don't just get on with it.

Sanctimonious little t0$$er.

Ignorant little t0$$er.

Like he knows the meaning of the word ”

You ignorant prat.
