"Queen" New material?
Queen return to recording studio
Saturday, October 28 2006, 09:38 BST - by Matt Houghton Rock icons Queen have returned to the studio to record their first new material in 15 years. Brian May revealed the news to fans on his official website, although admitted that there were no solid plans for an album as yet. He wrote: "This is our first Queen new recording session for about fifteen years. It may turn into an album...it may lead elsewhere, but right now we are having fun." He added, "it sounds pretty amazing to my ears...very different from anything Paul or Queen have ever done. And pretty epic!" --------------------------------------------------------------- Well, all I can say is that I am looking forward to hearing some new material from Queen - my favourite band. Anyone else agree? Or do you think that there is no "Queen" without Freddie as the lead singer? |

Hmmmm that's what I would have thought at one time.
However, since seeing Queen with Paul Rodgers I think that there is life left in the band yet. It must not be forgotten that Queen ARE a group and although Freddie is sadly no longer with us it does not mean to say that the rest of Queen should not continue without him. |

Yeh he seems very conspicuous by his absence.
I don't think he wanted to be part of the line-up when Queen with Paul Rodgers went on tour. |

Whilst I look forward to hearing some new material, I can't help but look on this with some feeling of trepidation.
I think that the remaining members of this legendary group should lay the name of Queen to rest - as let's face it, without Freddie Mercury, they will never be able to recreate their unique sound. I look forward to hearing the results of Brian & Roger recording together again, but I believe that with a new vocalist, they should do so under a new name. It will never, and could never be Queen again. |

It can be done, as proved by the great album from the New York Dolls this year, but it's a very different matter when your singer leaves/dies.
Without the original drummer/bassist and to some extent guitarist, a band can go on and do well, but when your frontman goes then it's more difficult. Needless to say, when your frontman was Freddie Mercury, recreating that magic is nigh-on impossible. Will be interesting to see what comes of this, although I'm looking forward to the Roxy Music comeback album more. |

As a Queen fan I am looking forward to see what the album would sound like with a new singer. I hope that it isn't Paul Rogers as there is plenty of decent singers out there, but like many have said that Queen died when Freddie died.

Did Freddie specifically intend for it to be released after his death or not? For example, if he had lived longer, and was still with us in 1997 (or whenever) would it have been released or was it to wait until he did eventually die? |

Freddie knew he didnt have long left, but amazingly it was managed to be kept from the press.
He visited the recording studios whenever he was well enough, and had a sofa there to rest on when he was no longer able to stand up. He specifically recorded as many vocals as he could, with the rest of the band aiding him in coming up with new material, specifically for it all to be finished off when he had left us. |

I saw them with Paul Rodgers, and they were amazing.
He is one of rocks best vocalists, and has been for many years. He is able to use his own style, and it works. If they tried to get a Freddie soundalike it would be awful, but this is actually very good. |

The live dvd is worth a look, and is the actual concert I was at. A great night it was too. |

I quote: "A poignant track, in that it sees John, Brian and Roger recording together for the first time without Freddie. The writing and recording of the track was prompted by the untimely deaths of Diana Princess of Wales, and of course, Freddie." |

John actually wanted to leave the band in 86 and didn't want to do the magic tour.. he was told it would be the last tour and so stayed.. once Freddie had died he had no real reason to stay in the band.. he was always a reluctant rock star
some of Made in Heaven was made up of left overs from the Innuendo album and some b' sides they did at the time.. Freddie was already ill when he recorded that.. some of the other stuff was done later when he knew he didn't have long left Mother Love was meant to have been recorded about 4 days before he died and is voice was still so powerful on that track.. it's a shame he couldn't hang on a year longer as the drugs to keep the virus off are so much better now then they were then will listen to the new stuff although not heard any of the Paul Rodgers stuff so far.. think it would be better not to use the Queen brand and just call it Brian, Roger and Paul |

I foresee this as being Terrible with a capital T. I'm sorry but Queen without Freddie is just a bunch of old rockers jamming with some new guy.

I saw them with Paul Rodgers and it was so much better than i feared.
I think there is life left there, but it may take a different direction than "Queen" With Paul Rodgers in it i could see it heading more down the path of Brian's solo stuff. (Which is well worth a look if you like the rockier side of queen) I think if they want to any new stuff it should be different than when they had Freddie. There isn't another singer like him and it was good to see that when they did the tour Paul was making the songs fit his style and not trying to be the new Freddie. |
