When I realised that Ash (what's his name) was performing Moondance I thought it would be a gift - such a brilliant song - and he seems to have some talent. But it was so "unsmooth" it wasn't true. It's like none of the words blended at all. What a total mess - how could he get it sooooo wrong?

He was APPALLING. Worst performance of the night maybe (Eton Road pretty bad too). He obviously doesn't understand SYNCOPATION, which is worrying if he wants to be a musician. You can't sing a song like Moondance all ON the beat... it's MEANT to be just off the beat all the time or it just doesn't work.

And then forgetting his lines? Just appalling.

It's not an easy song to perform IMO. Van Morrison may make it look easy, but that is a testimony to his ability, rather than the simplicity of the song.

if they had all sung that song, we would probably see at least half of them doing a worse job than Ashley.

WE had better ask Ashley!
If you are cocky, arrogant & not prepared to take the blame for a poor performance, then IMO he should have been voted off. Why Simon keeps sticking up for him, goodness knows, even after having had to have words with him before.

We may be able to ask him next week, when he is voted off?

I think for a young person it is not a familiar song - can't say i knew it really! it seemed to have a lot of words, and i'm sure Van Morrison will have learned the song for more than a week before performing it to millions! Give ashley a break.

Michael Buble does an amazing version of 'Moondance' on one of his recent multi platinum albums. Now there is a fantastic singer...

Ashley was out of tune, flat, and messed up the lyrics. I was cringing.

I have to agree with you here. Don't get me wrong, I've been the first to say he was awful tonight but agreed with Louis that he has a uniqueness that will either sound bad or fabulous.

This song wasn't his comfort zone at all and maybe he just didn't put the effort in because he hated it. Who can blame him if he doesn't like Big Band and Swing music?

I agree, although it's one of my favourite songs ever (at least in the original Van Morrison version) it's full of difficult key changes - I've been trying to perfect it for years to unleash my karaoke version on the public but have failed dismally, which is probably a relief to everyone

To give Ashley his due he remained more or less in tune but he had the intonation and passion of someone reading out the recipe for apple crumble.

Are there any songs that Ashley does know I'm just waiting for someone to give him, say, 'Yesterday' or 'My way' and for him to say 'No, I've never heard of it'

Sorry but if you've got a once in a lifetime chance of making it big and have got one song a week to learn, and perfect, surely you put 100% into it. Unless you're a smug obnoxious little twit.

It's laughable when Simon had a go at Eton Road for not being prepared enough!

If that was him trying he really should give up now and be voted off ASAP. He had no feel for the song at all. If you're a performer in that kind of talent show surely you have to show your talent range and even though it's not your 'thing' put in a half decent performance.

BTW does anyone remember the really talll guy last year who sang Moondance at stage one of the competition. I liked him!

Totally agree. IMO the benchmark for this tune. No comparison to Ashley's dismal performance

No, I think Van Morrison's is probably the 'benchmark' version - Van's reply when asked what he thought of the Waterboy's cover of 'Sweet Thing : **in deadpan and curmudgeonly tone** "Well, it wasn't as good as mine, now, was it?"

I agree with that Van Morrison could sing rings round most people. waterboys are pretty damn good live, too though.

I don't often post, but have been so annoyed that he did sing it VERY badly...... I remember catching a snatch of the lad who was in Corination Street, Richard Flieshman is it? He sang Moondance in a stars thing some months ago and made me stop what I was doing at the time as he sung it so well and powerfully, especially, I thought, for one as young, what a gigantic difference to the performance tonight on x factor

Hi Pooch

Van is actually quite underrated as a singer - he's definitely past his best now, his style can sound quite 'strangulated' - in many respects he's like a Dylan who could *really* sing (though Bob's underrated as a singer too).

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Youth is a pretty poor excuse.

The only thing that made Ashley's second performance slightly better than his first was that he didn't forget his words. Other than that it was just as dire. He should have walked tonight.

That's exactly what I said on another thread.

His diction in the delivery of a song is terrible.

He's just singing words as though he's reciting words in a school play, as opposed to communicating the meaning of a song to his audience.

The words were just coming out jerky and awkward as though they were disconnected from each other.

Terrible delivery.

The last 30 seconds made up for the first two and a half minutes - He does have flashes of brilliance, but he didn't seem to get the feel of the song. Hopefully he'll up his game for next week.I don't know why people think he's cocky, he seems quite nervous and insecure to me.
