Can you have TalkTalk for line rental and someone else for broadband?
My Dad was on Option 1 BT line rental (about £11 per month) and Metronet Pay as you Go broadband (£11.75 per month as he does not do much downloading).
He decided to switch his line rental from BT to TalkTalk's Talk 2, which as far as I can make out is line rental plus free evening and weekend calls for £11 per month, increasing to £14.89 after 12 months. My question is: can his broadband remain with Metronet, or does he now have to use TalkTalk for broadband? The reason I ask is that the other day TalkTalk left him a message on the answer machine asking him to let them know his MAC code (presumably so he can switch from his old ISP to TalkTalk). Can he just ignore this message and continue to use Metronet? Also, if your line rental is with TalkTalk, can you still use indirect providers like 18866 for daytime calls? Thanks for any help Geoff |

Yes you can have other broadband providers even if your line rental is with TalkTalk.
No TalkTalk can and do block access to low cost indirect (18866/1899/18185 etc) call providers, if you are found to use 090x and 08xx override codes they have in their T&Cs that they can either charge you more for calling those access number, increase the cost of your line rental or kick you off their service. BT are forced to allow you to use cheaper call providers, TalkTalk aren't. BT offers caller display for free. TalkTalk charge for this service. The unwise move line rental to anyone other than BT. The wise remain with BT for line rental, get free caller display and then CPS their calls automatically to Primus Saver 2, who for no monthly fee offer free evening and weekend calls, and because your line rental is with BT you can still use the likes of 18866, 1899 or 18185. 18185 being the one to go for now as they are 4p per call to UK landlines, 0.5p/min to certain international destinations and 2p/min weekends and 6p/min weekdays to mobiles. Primus Saver 2: www.planet-talk.co.uk/saver/ For £11 per month with BT, and Primus 2 you get line rental, free caller display and evening and weekend calls free. Plus you don't have to suffer TalkTalk's incompetence. Last edited by MadMulla : 29-10-2006 at 14:41. |
