We only started watching Torchwood today, having just got NTL Video on Demand (VoD) service up and running. I must admit, I prefer watching the programme when I want (without the hassle of videoing).

Out of interest, does anyone know how / or if the VoD figures are collated?

The assumption in the BARB figures is that roughly the right percentage of the panel have VoD/Sky+/PVR capability so their use of these systems reflects that of the whole population. AFAIK, they don't use any stats from NTL/TW of actual VoD viewing, but it would be an interesting stat to have.

Torchwood is over-hyped rubbish in my view.

But each to his own.

I suspect that the volume of complaints over the totally unnecessary bad language ("It's after the watershed, so we can say f**k, so we will") has shifted it to a later time slot.

The biggest lemon since 'Triangle'. Almost of 'Eldorado' proportions....

Still, UK Gold is re-running original Doctor Who episodes again!

You really think that original Doctor Who episodes are better than Torchwood? Shaky sets, rubbish special effects, "monsters" made of bubble wrap, unconvincing stories and some of the worst acting in British TV history?

Each to his own.

What volume of complaints? Were there any complaints? (I only recall one single "f*ck" in episode 1, and none since, although I haven't checked). And it hasn't been shifted to a later time slot - it was always intended to be 10pm after the opening double-bill.

What complaints were these? Lot's of bitching on certain forums about the language but how many actually complained to the BBC?

Surely if there had been numerous complaints about the language it would have been mentioned in the Points of View section they did on Torchwood. From what I understand that consisted of two complaints, one asking why it was only on Digital and the other complaining about the BBC3 logo.

AFIAK the BBC3 showing was always going to be at 10pm, it was only 9pm the first week as they were showing two episodes. If your idea is correct why has the BBC2 showing not shifted to a later slot as well?

Not quite - if you can get BBC3 you don't neccessarily get Sky One.

Not sure how that's relevant to my point.

And by that point I'd imagine most die hard lost fans will have seen 3.1-3.6 via the magic of this interweb thing anyway, and would rather watch torchwood than something they've seen before, only with a ton of ads.

It might take some of the spotty little brat demographic of Torchwood

As you say, most fans of Lost will have already seen them.

Actually I'd suggest the stories for the original Doctor Who are light years ahead of Torchwood. Give me "City of Death" or "Mind Robber" over "Cyberwoman" any day. Doctor Who at it's best is pure brilliance, at it's worst it's dire but then all TV is like that (and we are talking about a series made 40 years ago on a shoestring budget). As for dire acting? Torchwood makes the original Doctor Who look like Hamlet

But as you say, each to their own.

I'd be very surprised if Torchwood and Lost appeal to the same type of audience. It would be quite interesting to see the demographics of both Lost and Torchwood though.

I'm a Zelebity is a bigger threat to the Torchwood audience.

Ohhh.. I dunno.I think "most" is stretching it. I'd guess maybe 10% tops of Lost's viewership in the UK are naughty downloaders.

That is a (educated-ish) guess, mind.

Aaah, but you don't have to be a "downloader" to watch Lost early...

Thing is though... old Who has one or two things TW doesn't... heart and soul for a start...

"Figures for the Wednesday night repeats are holding up well, with last night's fifth episode attracting 2.3 million viewers and a 10% share.

The launch double bill of Torchwood attracted 2.8 million viewers and a 13% share three weeks ago.

On BBC3, Torchwood has dropped off from a stellar 2.4 million viewers for its debut to around 1 million - still very good figures for any multichannel show."

Just for comparison's sake:

"9.45am: Lost's series three debut was watched by 1.4m viewers on Sky One last night. More follows ..."

Ouch. That's gotta be way below what they were hoping for.

Apparently that's a success! Not as abysmal as their figures for '24' of course.

you are quite right, a cursory glance at the wails from people who can't get Sky on DS demonstrate that downloading is a minority habit, let alone those who don't post on DS about it! "Most" is a ludicrous assertion. "Most" DS posters who *really* like Lost, that is closer to the mark...

Interesting that Torchwoods audience held at the million mark. Were there not people claiming it was doomed because of Lost on Sky One?

Now seems clear that Torchwood has stablised at 1 million on BBC3 and 2.3 ish million on BBC2.

Those are not bad figures for either channel.

BBC3's Torchwood pulled ahead of Sky One's Lost in the big multichannel ratings battle last night.
Torchwood was watched by 971,000 viewers on BBC3 from 10pm, up slightly from last Sunday's 958,000, according to unofficial overnights.

Sky One's Lost premiere slipped below 1 million viewers for the first time this series, attracting 863,000 viewers last night in the 10pm hour."
