Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-ray disc player review
The Samsung BD-P1000 is the first Blu-ray player to go on sale in the UK, and it was reviewed in this week's Sunday Times.
Read the review here! Apparently, the picture/sound is 'stunning' on a 'Full HD' screen, but not so hot on a 'HD-ready' set. Last edited by CountAlucard : 30-10-2006 at 18:53. |

Hmm, yet another iffy review... The HD revolution doesn't look as good as what all the Electronics companies make out... basically they are bored and have come up with yet another money making gimmick.
If a HD DVD is marginally better as a SD DVD on a Full HD Display.. what the hell is the point in forking out all that money??? HD was needed for us lot with Crappy LCD's watching SD Just to make the pic look up to spec with CRT. Still not convinced. |

HD is the biggest technology ripoff ever.
Your last point regarding LCD displays is spot on. The main reason LCD and plasma owners rave on about HD is because most of the time they are stuck watching SD on their flat panel sets. And SD on an LCD is a joke. Saw NTL(SD) on a sexy looking LCD today. Nice from 20 feet away, but within normal viewing distance it was woeful. Facial closeups lacked any detail compared to CRT |

Not a great surprise after all watching a DVD on a 4:3 portable isn't going to provide the same impact as on a 32" widescreen but you wouldn't say DVD wasn't worth it. Or perhaps 9 years ago when DVD launched at similar prices to the new formats many people did dismiss it as a waste of time, it took a few years for prices to tumble and well look at it now ![]() The same applies when watching genuine 1080p from HD-DVD or Blu-ray, you will get the most out of it when viewing on a 50"plus 1920*1080 display and at this time it is very much a niche product for AV enthusiasts. Given that DVD releases will not be hampered by the new formats then you get the best of both worlds, those that buy into the news stuff will help to drive down prices and increase content and in a few years the choice of display and pre-recorded media will be more viable for the average customer. All technology has to start somewhere after all

I have the BD-P1000 and have to admit that the picture quality on a 32" Sony Bravia is good if not spectacular. I watch most Blu Ray discs on my Panasonic AE900 HD projector and with this the picture quality is excellent. I know the AE900 is only 720p capable and does not support full 1080p HD but neverthe less I am most impressed with the results. I am saving up for the Panasonic AE1000 which does support 1080p and I expect with this the results will be stunning
