If you need to connect your Sky + /Sky HD box so you can watch sky movies/box office using Dolby 5.1 then you will need an optical connection. Then have a look at this from Argos.

Its entry level and the remote is cr*p, but it does a good job in the front room.

Hope this helps

Then why do you need 5.1 speakers then as you wont get a 5.1 signal from any TV programme unless you have sky+ or TV drive. You wont get it from a DVD player either unless it has 5.1 anologue inputs and you are able to attach them to the sub sat speaker system.

Don't think you will find any for £50, if you do they wont be much good.
also those ones at Microdirect are PC speakers.

i doubt it very much - consider looking for a secondhand 5.1 surround system inc amp

that will give you far better surround sound - the pc based systems in truth are not too clever

they may well 'work' - but is that the sole criteria?

i and others were trying to give options for decent audio quality

I'd second this. I had a PC 5.1 system running for a few months when I was a student, but they just don't cut it (despite how much you're willing to convince yourself).

I'd possibly go further and say it might be an idea to look for a 5.1 amp on ebay, and just use 2 speakers with it for the moment, then save up and add speakers at a later date?

Richersounds sell some cheap speakers for something daft like £9.99 a pair, there not fantastic, but they'd do as a start (and could be used as a rear pair if you decided to get a decent pair for the front). And the £9.99 a pair speakers will still far outshine a PC type system.
