iPod - Volume Leveling
Having finally worked out what was going on with the wifes iPod, thought I'd post the findings up here in case anyone else happened upon similar problems.
So .... She got a new (5G?) 30g iPod while in the USA. Updated it and installed iTunes7. Copied a bunch of music onto it and found some of the MP3's didn't play back properly. The volume would sit at a constant, really low, level until you turned it up full where it would jump, in one step, to be barely audible. The next rack would then kick in and deafen you. The affected tracks behaved the same when played in iTunes. Had a muck about with the sound leveling option on the iPod ... no joy. Tried to find an over-ride setting in iTunes ... also no joy. Now, the thing is .... I use Media Monkey as my music manager. I've scanned my entire library and applied a volume equalisation to it all so it all plays back at the same level. This equalisation setting (in +/- db) is stored in the ID3 tag and is visible as a numeric setting in Media Monkey. When the track info is viewed in iTunes, it looks as though it wasn't interpreting this information correctly. Two sample tracks: Track 1 - Volume adjustment of -10.7db - iTunes had it set to -100% Track 2 - Volume adjustment of -10.9db - iTunes had it set to +100% ??!??!??! errrr .... OK. If I then edited the volume adjustment in iTunes back to zero, I lost the setting Media Monkey had applied. Now, I spent a lot of time getting my library set up how I like in Media Monkey (ID3 tags were a MESS ... the capitals are justified) so I didn't want to have to remove all the leveling information just so iTunes could cope with it. Solution? She now uses Media Monkey to sync her iPod. Songs copied over on Media Monkey play back perfectly .... no volume issues at all so far and no loss of the information applied by Media Monkey. We also noticed that the file explorer in iTunes is significantly slower than that in Media Monkey. It's also a far smaller piece of software. iTunes ..... pffffft. (Oh ... and the tracks that iTunes had problems with - I say iTunes as when copied with Media Monkey they were OK, hence the blame lies at iTunes door - play back perfectly on everything else I've tried them on. All PC apps and all other portable players I've tried them on have been fine.) |
