Englebert Humperdinck's version of The Last Waltz is basically a ballroom waltz. This is danced at approx 29 bars per minute which is only half of the speed of a Viennese Waltz (approx 59/ 60 bars per minute). Hence, you cannot be serious! Although, this being Strictly Come Dancing, our dim judges probably wouldn't know the difference!

So which songs would you recommend as a good Viennese Waltz tune?

The fact of the matter is that few dances look more elegant and graceful than a Viennese Waltz being danced to the music of Vienna (hence the name of the dance). Most of the Strauss Waltzes come across beautifully as do some songs from the shows, suitably adapted. In truth, most modern music just doesn't cut the mustard for this particular dance. But don't hold your breath that the BBC will get it right!

It would be nice to blame the BBC for this one but as we've discovered recently, the celebrities are firmly to blame for that fiasco.

Not sure about the celebrities being to blame for some inappropriate music ... on I.T.T. the BBC infers that the music is all down to the professionals! Yet on other threads we read that the BBC has the final word. Was not Ian Waite's choice of music turned down by the BBC? In view of all the adverse criticism perhaps the BBC are trying to shift the blame. It really would be nice to know, particularly as the Viennese Waltz is coming up.

'After the Ball' is a beautiful Viennese Waltz.

There is also a great Cha Cha track called "Star".

"Rainbow Connection" for Waltz (which I didn't know until just recently was actually composed for 'THe Muppet Show'!)

"Dancing like Lovers" for Waltz (can't remember whether that's the actual title of the song"

"Dancing Fool" for Quickstep

"Copacabana" for Samba

"Last Night of the World" for Rumba

There are a couple of tracks on Madonna's much maligned 'I'm Breathless' album that I've always thought I'd like to dance to:

"Now I'm Following You": quickstep
"Sooner or Later": foxtrot or waltz

Horror of horrors, my least favourite dance, the samba to "I'm Going Bananas"! Awful but maybe also quite kitch and fabulous. I can just see Anton in a Carmen Miranda fruit turban and maracas now!

i love the eagles take it to the limit for a waltz,
lets face the music and dance for QS,
sacrifice elton john for rumba,
can you feel it (??? by whom??) for Cha cha,
I think Paul simon did a samba but can't remeber which track,
Volare for foxtrot, or The continental, no idea who by,
I'm sure Tom Jones did a waltz, possibly a QW, but I can't find the CD
Golden brown for a V. waltz if it didn't have that irritating extra beat every few bars
Tango - the one from the new version of Shall we dance
Paso - the classic one
Jive - too many to mention!

Rofl! I'm not sure it'd do much for the 'glamourous' image of SCD but it'd have me ROFL!

Considering how much he hates the samba, maybe he and Jan should just go for a complete send-up! I can't imagine any other couple would be able to pull it off quite so spectacularly...

Not in waltz time, though - or is it only me that dislikes it when they crowbar a waltz into a song that's supposed to be in 4/4?

Girl from Ipanema: no idea which dance - it's a bossanova, what goes with that?

Words and feel wise it'd make a lovely rumba, but don't know if it would work with the dance steps...

...thinking about the whole timing thing.

I've just noticed, listening again to the "Strictly Ballroom" paso music that Mark and Karen danced to, that it seems to be in 6/8, which is a duple time signature as required by a paso doble, but I wondered how common that was? Would it be frowned on in competition?

I didn't think of that. Maybe they could slow it down a bit or something. I also would love to here a Rumba to Viva Forever by the Spice Girls (and yes I know that it sounds cheesy seeing as Emma is danicng this year)

For Quickstep "National express by the Devine Comedy"

If you ever watch the Sketch show Tiitybangbang On BBC3 its what Melony Nation the female magician performs her stage act with her long suffering stage partner "the Bunny Rabbit" to.

Actually the two sort of dance to it

I would love love LOVE someone to dance the American Smooth to "It's So Quiet" by Bjork! I think it would be fantastic! Also, foxtrot to The Pink Panther theme!!
