I am willing to bet loads that the salsa dancers get higher marks than the waltzers on Saturday night. My reasoning is that usually the judges have a personal preference for the more funky, raunchy, free spirit type dances rather than the staid, old fashioned ones and I reckon the marks will concorde.

And that's because only one of them is a ballroom expert..... time to get 2 ballroom and 2 "theatrical" judges

It is very difficult to compare these dances in any way fairly, so I fear you may be right unfortunately.

It isn't easy to compare like with like when the dances are so different, surely this isn't fair.

I seem to recall they had a similar problem last year? I forget what the Viennese Waltz was paired with, but the dancers had a job to make it look exciting by comparison. Also by all accounts it's just a difficult dance, so it's harder to get a decent mark in.

Maybe given the uproar last week, the tables will turn..... perhaps the difficulties of VW will be recognised by the judges in comparison to what Len might call a lot of "bum wiggling and posing" that will be the basis of salsa

*wakes up now*

It was the Samba.

I wonder why the Samba seems to have been dropped for this week anyway. Is it a lot harder than the salsa? I wasn't aware anyway that salsa qualified as a 'ballroom dance'.

A lot of young people Salsa, there's been a boom in Salsa dancing as it is a comparatively easy dance.

This will have been included by the production department as it will appeal to the "younger audience" and so not do the ratings any harm. Well, a bit of good actually.

You certainly won't be seeing the "Military two-step."

As it has been previously said, it's gonna be hard for the public to separate these two dances when voting . Expect some "heavy leaning" by the judges in an attempt to influence the public vote.
Mind you there's been a fair bit of "in-fighting" amongst them lately. I'm not sure it's "all in the script."

Yup.

I hope we get the Samba at some point. Having said that, I'm not a fan as unless it's done well, it looks awkward to me.

They've probably had to include a couple of extra dances because it's a couple of weeks longer?
I remember - was it the series before last - when the VW was just a group dance and not marked, and now it is included too.

I've always thought it was unfair that a fast, catchy dance is compared like for like with a more sedate ballroom dance - even like the cha cha cha and the waltz, and the leader board often reflects. Often you will find the top 2 or 3 slots are for a 'dance' rather than 'couples'. I guess they do it because they think it would be 'boring' watching 8 versions of the same dance, but I would quite like to compare the couples at the same stage of training for each dance doing the same dance - it would make comparisions easier anyway!

I agree, but I think this is where it not being a pure dance show/trying to attract non-dance-enthusiasts comes into it.

As far as I remember: Viennese Waltz was a group dance 2 years ago and not marked, last year it became part of the "authorised cannon"

Was salsa a group dance last year?

I think Argentine Tango was a group dance last year.

Salsa was a wonderful group dance last year. It still makes me smile every time I play it.

Such fun had by everybody.

There were so many stand out dances last year, but that was wonderful. On the 6th show.

Aaawww, the line up of celebs and the sparkly personalities on Series 3 were brilliant.

Made even better with the training footage of shouty Salsa man and Patsy's reaction to Jacqui's 'shaking'

Why have they changed the format? It was easier when the male/female celebrity did the same dance

lol, yeah, I remember that. Very amusing.

Tissy: I don't know why they changed it, but I have got the impression this year and even the previous two that they're still experimenting/don't really know which orders/divisions work the best.

I do agree with Tissy on that. It also means some celebs have done a disproportionate amount of, say, ballroom v. latin, (offhand I think Emma for instance has done a quickstep, foxtrot and now viennese waltz, with just a jive as a latin dance). I would rather see them alternate if possible for as long as possible. It does also favour some (Peter just as an example) who do one form better than another, I believe he has done waltz, tango and now viennese waltz. You could also argue that female celebs who do more ballroom have an advantage, as it is danced in hold (can I add Jan as one who has done only one latin dance, the jive?) On the other hand, those who may possibly be better at ballroom may have done 3 latin dances. (Matt is on his third latin dance isn't he, cha cha, paso and now salsa. It does seem a bit strange really.

I think that because they've now decided to 'mix up' the couples that you're going to have uneveness in the dances for a couple of weeks. Carol's done ballroom, Latin, ballroom and now Latin again, whereas some of the others, because of the mixing up, will be doing the same dicipline for a second week, it should, hopefully, settle down again in a week or so.

If you are an Erin & Peter fan, then I think it's very fair indeed. Peter is bound to get better marks than he would had he been dancing a Salsa!

I wouldn't say that. depends on what style of Salsa they do and how well they do it.

I think the walters will get higher marks personally.

Of course, it depends whether the judges actually know how to judge salsa which will be an interesting thing to see after last week.

I'd be surprised if the judges knew the difference between New York, LA or Cuban styles of salsa. Can't say that I've entirely grasped it myself! My guess is that most couples might do New York on one style.

Roughly translated for the non salsa types: It will be FILTHY!

Well, the guy doing the couple review on It Takes Two did say that he thought the Salsa would be marked less on technique and more on performance - oh heavens!

Oooh I say LOL

mindyann: that seems likely to me, too, as the judges are less likely to be able to judge actual technique.

Didn't either Erin or Lilia say it was the Samba next week on ITT tonight?
