I don't think the potential marks for the waltzers will be any lower. An excellent waltz and an excellent salsa will probably get similar marks, but a soso salsa may end up getting higher marks than a soso waltz because mistakes etc. in the salsa are much easier to hide/more difficult to spot. The v.waltz is one of those dances where the difference between looking good and looking bleh is very small (and everyone will be looking hard at the waltzers to see if they are getting everything right). It isn't fair because one dance is easier than the other...

Not as filthy as Cuban though!
I would say that I think it could be a little unfair, I mean IF Peter and Erin, and Anton and Jan were doing the Salsa then it would be unfair, to them.
Similarly I would not expect Louisa and Vincent to be quite as good at the Viennese Watz, and sorry Brendan would have a fit if he had to do the VW instead of the Salsa this week.
Maybe it is a bit unfair, BUT actualy it is for the right reasons.

I think the majority of couples have been allocated their stronger dance out of ballroom and latin this week.
Peter and Jan are going to handle the VW much better than they would have the salsa. Similarly, Claire and Louisa are more likely to shine with the salsa. Mark and Emma are about the same on both, maybe the first slightly better at latin and the second slightly better at ballroom, and they have been allocated dances accordingly.
Only doubt is Matt with the Salsa (think he would have been better at ballroom), and Ray with VW (loved his Cha Cha Cha so would have been great to see him salsa). And can't remember what Carol is doing.
Maybe the BBC has finally adopted the "save everyone" attitude!
I think the judges maybe more fair than the general public. The salsa dance is more "entertaining" (well at least I think so) and may capture more votes than the waltzers.
I think the judges will give higher scores to the VW but the public in general will vote more for the Salsa.

Exactly. I wouldn't have said it was so much of a problem with the judges (despite the odd marks this year!). However the public may be more likely to vote for a more exciting dance that entertains ... most of us aren't ballroom dancers after all and might not appreciate all the subleties of the Viennese Waltz. In that way it's a bit unfair to put Latin against ballroom all the time but I suppose the BBC wants variety in each show.

I think it's definitely the case that all the couples have their preferred/strongest dance. So did the professionals choose for themselves which to do, or did the judges or producers do the honours? Or was it entirely random, and just pure luck that everyone got their favourite? If it was deliberate, then I think it was a good move - it'll be nice to compare everyone doing a dance from their preferred field, plus it should make the competition a bit tougher.
It'll be interesting to see how the marks work out tomorrow night - when it was the rhumba and the quickstep a few weeks ago, all the rhumbas were at the bottom of the leader-board apart from one (if I remember correctly!)

Like everyone I love trying to second guess the SCD production team - this time I guessed right.
My logic was to give the different genders either latin/standard based on their present overall ranking
Top Three
Emma - v.waltz
Louisa - salsa
Mark - salsa
Middle Three
Ray - v. waltz
Matt - salsa
Carol - salsa
Bottom Three
Jan - v. waltz
Claire - salsa
Peter - v. waltz
So I don't think its totally random. But it does also look like they've chosen particularly good dances for nearly all the couples (can't decide whether that was random).
I am pretty confident a waltzing couple will leave - either Jan and Anton or Peter and Erin (hope not the last two)
of course its not gonna be fair, they're completely different dances, but the BBC cant help that, they have to do 2 different dances (otherwise the programme would be boring) but the judges will take that into consideration
