Ipod Nano Battery

My first Ipod Nano's battery never lasted more than about 2 hours max. I'll admit I switched it on before fully charging it for a couple minutes, I wasn't aware at the time but apparently that may have been why the battery didnt last long, even though I let it fully charage afterwards.

I took out a 1 year guaruntee with it incase anything went wrong so I took it to the store and asked if they could fix it, replace the battery or replace the Ipod and they gave me a new Ipod.

With my new Ipod nano I was extra careful to follow the instructions. I let in charge for 3 full hours I didn't want to charge it too long either incase that would have some effect. Anyway My Ipod is better than the first but still not as good as expected and not what I paid £139 for. The battery lasts about 3 hours now.

I don't know what to do because I don't want to go back to the store and say the battery isn't lasting long enough again because they'll probably blame me for wasting 2 Ipods. Also it's such a hassle having to re re-register and put all the songs on to it.

How long on average do most people's Ipod Nano's last?? I'm I just being unreasonable wanting more than 3 hours. For a product that says 14 It should deliver that or at least 10! I put it to sleep when not using it and I don't have the backlight on more than nessacary. What am I doing wrong!?

I've just bought a nano (the first generation one) which states 14 hours of battery. I charged it fully this morning for 4 hours.

I took it off charge at 11.30 and I've been using it for most of the time since then. It's on its last red bar on the battery indicator now, so that's just over 5 hours of battery. I didn't charge mine for the first time either.

Stated battery life is based on mp3s encoded in 128kbps. I play mp3s that are higher quality than that so the battery runs down faster.

... played one after the other, not using shuffle, backlight off, no audio effects on, mid-volume .... etc etc.

In other words, the optimum possible playing conditions that no-one in the real world will ever use.

Pretty much all manufacturers will claim figures higher than 99.9% of the population are ever likely to attain.

Having said that, 5/6 hours out of a claimed 14 is pretty crap ......

Is that the 1st gen with 14 hour claimed batter life? (In which case, thats about what you'd expect)

Or the 2nd gen with 24 hour claimed battery life? (In which case, thats still pretty poor at less than 50% of whats claimed)

Same here, 1st Gen Nano

I've never really followed the instruction on the correct way of charging the Nano. I just charge it when the thing is dead....

Try turning off the "clicker" and turn the background light to 2 seconds - you can do this in the settings on your iPod. My iPod only lasted a few hours before I did this too, now I've pretty much doubled it's life!

I have no experience of any ipod but I can confirm that backlights certainly reduce the battery life significantly on my pocket DAB 1000 and Iriver FP390T.

If it's any help, even modern lithium ion batteries need to be fully charged on the first charge (and good practice for subsequent charges after), also it's advisable to charge it before storing it away somewhere when not in use, read the manual and observe charging times.
