According to a report on Radio Scotland yesterday, Plasma tvs cost an extra £68 per year for electricity!

Jings...that would DOUBLE my annual bill! (Keep pedalling wife!)

is that compared to a CRT or an LCD?

i read that LCDs use more juice than plasmas because the screen illumination is always at full power whereas plasmas power consumption depends on the brightness of the picture

It's the other way round, LCDs generally use less power than plasma TVs because they dont need to power hundreds of electrodes to stimulate phosphors.

But there is not much in it.

Hard to compare like for like in terms of screen size for LCD and Plasma but you could be talking upto 50% difference between the two and a similar gap between LCD and CRT for the same screen size.

Given the power useage of a 60w light bulb over the winter months the whole hysteria about Plasma wattage which has popped up recently is just a joke.

The consumption between the two sets varies according to what the image on screen is. During a very bright scene the plasma will use more power than an lcd as all the pixels are being driven quite highly. During a very dark scene the lcd will use more power than the plasma because the backlight is still consuming power while the plasma uses little power to create a dark scene.
During a typical day the plasma will consume more power. But the difference is minimal and the cost very low.
I would be willing to pay the extra for the plasma in any case!
