Can I buy a TV without the TV parts?

Seriously: Does anyone know of a product that takes a number of video inputs (SCART or S-VIDEO from DVD player, DVB-T STB, etc) and provides me with a channel selection, audio part (amplifier, volume control, speakers or connectors for such), and a video output to drive a display via DVI or SVGA?

So, basically a TV without the display part and without the RF parts.

Anyone? Thanks!

Yeah it's called a computer monitor

On a more serious note there used to be monitor only flat panel displays with no internal tuning facilities but they tend to rely on an external media box to provide most of the extra video inputs. These days the market is centered around more integrated displays especially in regards to analogue/digital terrestrial tuners so I don't think you will have a lot of luck.

Try asking over at the AVForums .

Thanks for your input; I'll look into the AV Forums later.

The unit I am after is not called a computer monitor, though. It'd be called somethink like "a smart SCART video and audio switch box with DVI output, audio volumne control and remote."

I get tears in my eyes when I see the price difference between an LCD TV and a LCD display, even though I'd use none of the TV parts other than the display, Oh, and the SCART-switching facility.

It was just a curious thought, though.

If anyone has ever tired to use a LCD computer montior as a Tv then you will know that they are useless..!! No viewing angle what's so ever..!! When I was looking for a LCD Tv for the living room , I made damned sure that anywhere I stood I could still see a nice clear picture, hence I went for a samsung.. try moving more than 15 degrees away from a computer montior then forget it..!!!

if your looking for a plasma the answer is YES

Panny commercial range do them from 42" - 65"

imo they are far better in terms of scaling etc than the tv's

i use a PH9 50" HDTV one - tv is through Sky HD

they have slots in the rear to take different input boards - 3 of which can be fitted

they include scart/component/sdi/hdmi etc etc options

they also come with DVi/VGA inputs as standard

these are the panels you see in Tesco/Heathrow etc - they also carry 2 years warranty as opposed to the 1 year on consumer models

pm me if you want details of uk suppliers

you will find that this panel/monitor approach is used by people who want to get the best pq from a plasma - and of course they are compatible with the Lumagen/Crystalio scalers if you want to take pq that extra step!

having had 1 panny consumer 'telly' and 2 commercial panels i would never go back to the 'telly' approach!

hope this helps

ps - the fabulous Fujitsu 58 range are monitor only
