"Skype, the popular VoIP service, has been having technical difficulties with its SkypeIn service which enables Skype users to have a real phone number and receive normal phone calls through their Skype service.

Users report that only a small proportion of calls to UK numbers are getting through, with voice mail failing and some users not receiving any calls at all."

Skype have had problems for a few months with Skype in numbers. I cancelled mine and had it refunded about three months ago because of calls not getting through. Its a really bad sign.

I use Skype mainly for ebay contact and instant messaging now, never rely on it for anything important.

That makes it utterly useless.

Glad I spent money recently with an actual professional outfit instead of Skype or one of these other services that emphasise "cheap" over all else.

The whole point of VOIP is 'cheap' not any other frills. Landline call charges are so cheap these days that the saving compared to voip is often marginal. It's part of why the line rentals have been steadily increasing.

"Buy cheap, buy twice."

I didn't go to Vonage for the frills, but for the reliability.

Over the next few months and years, while many Arthur Daly type VOIP companies will suffer reliability issues, silly changes of contract taking away free stuff, closures and the like, I'm confident that a company like Vonage will keep on delivering.

I had 15 months of free calls for €6 in total, and reliability has been top notch, and is run by a professional company that has operations in many countries.

Vonage preys on people who are happy to waste money, though for a very few it's value for money.

I just find it odd that spending less than even BT line rental and getting unlimited calls to US/Canada/UK/chunk of EU can be considered by anyone as a waste of money.

It is if you don't make a few hundred calls per month.

Yes, BT and their line rental, or even a cable phone line rental is a big rip off, but the really crazy thing is many people who have Vonage have a phone line too, how stupid is that!

I have used skype for years, very first beta and right now have v3.0. I also took part in the free UK landlines for 6 months (unlimited with no silly 'fair' usage policy). Never once had a problem with it and use it daily. On the skype forums a few people say they bought the £10 credit and their free calls weren't activated for a few days... but there were about 15 of them.

So right now I'm not changing. I'm sure problems exist, but I'm hardly going to move away from free calls and amazing quality because of 'reported' problems.

That isn't the point at all. Businesses don't use it because they can make cheaper calls to landlines, they use it because they can use their existing network among other things.

Me? I use it just because I can. I have an Asterisk server with which I do queuing, music on hold, etc. I have as many PSTN numbers as I like, I can make as many outgoing calls at once as my upload bandwidth permits. The VOIP provider I use certainly isn't the cheapest, but it is very reliable.

I use skype on a daily basis so got the Skype Netgear SPH101 WiFi phone which is great. Only downside is the poor battery life but it does for me at the min! I purchased a US skypein number and get calls from people in the US for free as part of their calling package so it saves them money.
The only problems i've been having is skype out calls to uk mobiles. I hear them but they never hear me. Not tried for a week or so now but it happened on 10 or 15 attempts.

I also had to wait 14 days for my purchase to register for free calls offer to work.
