With many many VoIP providers out there and NTL:Telewest known for having such expensive calls it's not really important if NTL come out with their own VoIP soon.
As for Vonage it's a lot of money to pay when for most people they never make enough calls to warrant the high cost. If make many hundreds of calls each and every month then maybe it's OK, but you have to pay each and every month even if you don't make many hundred calls per month which is required to make the service worth the money. I use VoIPStunt and Sipgate I have a local number with both Sipgate and VoIP Stunt. For VoIP Stunt I pay roughly £1.80 per month for 300 mins per week of free calls to UK, USA, Canada, Australia and several European countries, and unlike Vonage that £1.80 can be used on chargeable calls and not lost. I use both VoIPStunt and Sipgate on a Linksys PAP2 ATA, and part of the feature of the ATA is Anonymous Caller Rejection, and can bar any numbers I want, as it's VoIP you get caller display for free, along with Call Waiting, 3-way calling, call transfer etc etc. I can withhold my number, I haven't changed the setting so I use the default *81 to do so. Vonage make most of their money by making people think they are getting good value by these limited 'unlimited' call packages, when they do have limits on the amount of calls you can make, but they know most people never make enough calls to make the tariff value for money, and they are laughing all the way to the bank. I dunno, I'm with Vonage and love it's simplicity and reliability. And I make a decent amount of calls to Canada, US and UK to justify the £8/month, which covers calls to these countries, and I've never run into any upper limit yet, what limits are you speaking of? I like the idea of one service as well rather than using two services to make and receive calls. It also feels a lot more professional than these cheap cheap cheap merchants who constantly change the details of their offers over the last few months, and seem to constantly suffer reliability issues, I believe Skype has had problems with Skypein or something over the last while for example, rendering it virtually useless. I have 2 services simply because I can.
I can use one if I wanted, I have an incoming number with VoIPStunt, so I can and do make and receive calls on that one number, because the ATA I use has two lines, I simply added another service this time Sipgate. In the T&C it states that you mustn't make more than a reasonable amount of calls. Yes if you do make several hundred calls each and every month and you don't fall foul of their T&C then it could be value for money, for the vast majority of people it never will be, and this is where they make their money. Granted at the moment VoIPStunt aren't issuing numbers, so you would need to set your ATA up to make and receive calls with different providers, with many ATAs that's no problem at all, and you wouldn't know it wasn't the same service, with Software again it's so simple. As for VoIPStunt yes is is pretty cheap, but is still a very professional service, and considering it was from the people who brought you the low cost carriers 18866, 1899 and 18185 that many people use, you know it makes sense. For many Vonage is a big rip off, for the very few maybe like yourself who do make many hundred calls each AND every month then the cost is worth it, for others they just see 'free calls' when in fact they are paying £8 per month for those calls, and probably would never had spent that much in calls anyway, if people don't make hundreds of calls each month then as the features you get are built into VoIP they aren't getting value for money. Like said Vonage may suit a small percentage of people as long as they make enough calls, for others there are many other services better suited to them. VoIPStunt, VoIPCheap etc hasn't suffered any reliability issues for a very long time, and then they were only minor, Vonage has suffered a few times, and well Skype isn't a grown ups VoIP it's a kids toy-town service. I dumped my landline and switched to VoIP so I could save money, so £1.80 per month for enough minutes to many countries and if I go over or out of my free-days then that £1.80 (granted it's £7.20 every 4 months) then I can use that credit for the calls at 1c / minute. Maybe I was just spoilt when I had 15+ months of free calls for €6 in total. I would and do recommend Vonage to people when they have cable broadband and do make several hundred calls each and every month, but I advise them to sit down and check past phone bills to see if they do make enough calls to warrant the expense. |
