SIM cards from other countries

Hi, I'm off to New Zealand in the new year for a few weeks and am told the best thing to do is to pick up a PAYG SIM on arrival. National calls (booking campsites etc) will then be at a decent rate.

Vodafone are the only GSM operator there so hopefully no problem as I have a Vodafone locked handset here.

Will the 'lock' let me use a NZ Vodafone SIM card?

Thanks

I doubt it. Despite having the a similar name the network ID will be different.

Hi,

Your handset would be locked to the Vodafone UK network and as such would need unlocking for you to use an overseas SIM in the handset. It's possible to request an NUC from Vodafone customer services. You can do this either by contacting 191, going into a Vodafone store or getting in touch by email using the ‘contact us’ option on www.vodafone.co.uk.

You'll just need to provide the following information:

- Make and model of handset
- IMEI number (you can find this by entering * # 0 6 # and pressing send)
- Address including post code

Vodafone then contact the manufacturer to obtain the NUC code. If the handset is under twelve months old then there would be a charge of £19.99 to unlock the handset which is either debited from the account (if contract) or needs to be applied onto the handset as calling credit (if pay as you talk). If your handset is over twelve months old then you can get an NUC code free of charge.

or to save you doing that there is the option of Vodafone Passport for more information click here
it works in New Zeland and the basics of it are:

75p connection fee for making a call back to the uk mobiles or landlines.

outbound calls: you use inclusive minutes first then its the normal charges per min for a call.

recieving a call: no further charge for up to 60 mins. then you need them to call back to incur the 75p charge again or normal roaming charges apply.

sms are 35p + normal message charge on contract
sms are 49p per message on payt

It's an SE K750i

I have Vodafone passport setup but was thinking of going the local SIM route for making calls internal to NZ - booking campsites etc. We'd keep another phone with us on for making calls back home.

I'm 12 months into an 18 month contract so guess I would have to pay for it to be unlocked.

To be honest if its going to cost I'll not bother.

We've an old unlocked Nokia 8310......nothing fancy but its a cracking little phone - have used it on Orange, O2 and Vodafone!
