I have managed to obtain a repair kit via eBay which claims to solve the problem. It contains two easy to get capacitors and an IC chip which is probably hard to source.

Will try it and report back on the results.

It is now repaired and working well again.

I was able to do the capacitor swaps with some help, following the instructions but the surface ic repair was well beyond my expertise. It requires a steady hand and a very fine iron. I took it to the local TV repair shop and he did that part for me.

Without the above link it would have been very hard to take it apart.
