British Gas/Sky Broadband offer
Mr Pringle
07-11-2006
We've just had a phone call from British Gas offering us Sky TV, Sky broadband and the associated phone line... with free calls day and night to landlines.

They're offering two Sky TV 'mixes' for £11.25 a month, the broadband - up to 16Mbps, unlimited - for £10 a month and the phone line for £5 a month with the free calls.

According to them, this should include the whole shebang of free TV installation, etc.

But I have a couple of questions before all the NTL services we have are cancelled: firstly, we haven't currently got a BT line at all... one would need to be installed. They've said this will be free - won't we have to pay BT?

Secondly, will there be a BT line rental to pay?

And.. are there any other hidden charges that they'll want? It's all very good compared to the current £10 - £24.99 - £15 we're paying NTL.. but so long as they're not hiding all sorts of stuff!

Ha, scratch that... just been on the phone to NTL. They're going to give us 4Mbps broadband, Talk Unlimited 24 and the Base Pack for TV for £25 a month. Woo.

Should've tried to get 10Mbps broadband out of them.. but oh well.

Glad to hear BG gave you the ammunition to batter NTL's price down.

Pity though, I'd have suggested you got them to put the part about the BT line installtion being free in writing - because I reckon it would've cost £124.99.

Plus, of course, the Sky Talk £5/month calls thing is a CPS service and requires a BT line. Hence, £11/month rental after the line's installed.

Ahh, I didn't realise it was through Sky Talk, which I remember from years back. I wasn't intirely sure how they were planning to work it.

I thought there'd be a BT line installation charge as obviously Sky Broadband can't do this themselves with BT's domination, etc.

Ah well - at least NTL have been battered down a bit. It's also quite nice that they've halved our current bill that's due to be paid (£70 down to £35!).

Can anyone enlighten me please?

British Gas / Centrica sold off OneTel to CPW.

British Gas / Centrica therefore no longer has anything to do with OneTel.

British Gas / Centrica has decided to strike some sort of deal with Sky.

I'm not so sure now.

I've just been on the BG website and using the word 'sky' for a search produces no results?

However, clicking on their BRITISH GAS HOMEPHONE link is enlightening!

(I've cut and pasted the text below because I think that link is one of those annoying time-limited ones and will stop working after a while).

Yes they did a deal with CPW when they sold OneTel to them, same as they have recently done a deal with Sky.
