Adding extra BBC1/ITV1 during lift
albertd
08-11-2006
During the lift yesterday, I noticed an interesting feature about the DHD4000.

I was able to detect some Muxs from an extra transmitter (Sandy Heath) and out of interest went to the 'add channels' feature. Where I had previously seen just 'Replace Mux', when I settled on BBC1 it gave me 'add'. So I selected it, and I now should have two regional versions of BBC1 whenever there is a lift (until I do a complete rescan). I was certainly receiving two last night.

I then tried the same for ITV1 on its Mux and that worked too, giving me Anglia as well as London. It didn't seem to work for any other channels that I could detect from Sandy.

Might be a useful feature when the power goes up after DSO. I didn't know the DHD4000 had any kind of manual 'add channels' except 'replace Mux'. I wonder why just some channels though - do the regional channels like BBC1 and ITV1 have some identifying feature which the national ones do not?

Correction - for 'add channels' read 'manual tune'.

Out of interest, where abouts on the EPG did the additional ITV1 and BBC1 variants appear?

It is a term used to describe enhanced propagation conditions when TV (and other VHF and UHF signals) travel much further than usual. This is usually when there is a period of stable high atmospheric pressure - either very hot weather in the summer or foggy in the winter.

It is the time when local TV can be interfered with by distant transmitters on the same channel and on usually blank channels you might see distant, even foreign, transmissions (particularly talking about analogue - but increasingly with digital as well).
