I'm looking to buy a LDC TV and as it's a pretty big purchase (to me) I have a slight preference for buying from high street shop over on-line.

My thought was to see if I can get John Lewis to price match for me. "Never knowingly undersold" and all.

Having studied their web site, it says they do not match web prices and only price match to the local area as defined by them. However they also say that if you buy from them and then find it cheaper anywhere (including on line) then they will refund the difference.

Has anyone got any first hand experience of doing this? The TV I want is £500 more in JL than on line, so I would much rather not have to try and test their refund the difference policy, and would be much happier if they could just match for me.

Obviously I could ask in the shop, but it was too busy on Saturday when I went in.

No experience of refunding the difference ... try calling and asking for the dept manager. Avoid saturdays though (phone and in person) as you run the risk of ending up with a "saturday boy" (or girl). I don't mean this in a disrepectful way, but from experience a lot of weekend staff are just working their for extra pocket money during college etc and don't know as much as the other, full time staff. (I did exactly the same when I was 16-18).

I've only done it once, and that was many years ago. They matched an online price that was in stock. You then had to wait for the refund to arrive.

Personally if there's a 500 quid difference to start with just order from that place instead of trying to get refunds that might not happen.

They do a 5 year warranty included as well though. Which is a definite nice to have.

Several years ago I bought a DV camera from John Lewis. Within a week I found a local shop had it about £50 cheaper. Went back to JL and sure enough, having verified my claim I had the £50 back. A couple of weeks later I found the same camera for a further £25 cheaper. Once again they paid the difference. Within reason they do honour their promise. This does become clouded with product on the internet however. I do think the 5 year warranty needs to be considered as well.

It has to be the exact same item to count, I know that.

I think probably whether it is honoured or not may depend on who you speak to and how their sales figures are at the moment.

I also think it doesn't count if the item is in a promotion, you would need to check that though. Why not just buy it £500 cheaper and take out the warranty? At least it would be cheaper.

And it also has to be in stock at the underselling shop as well. Nevertheless is can represent a good deal, but as you say, don't get blinded by it.

Easiest way, is to wait until you have the money and are ready to buy. Get confirmation that the online shop has item in stock. Take confirmation to John Lewis. You can then choose not to buy from jl if they decide not to price match.

I have just tried to get JL to match the price of a 42WLT66, stand and 360 DVD player with the price quoted by PRC.

The only reason I wanted to purchase from JL was the 'free 5 year guarantee'

JL response was that PRC did not have the TV in their shop with a ticketed price. The DVD player from PRC was a multi region so did not count. And the stand had to be a special purchase so JL's list price stood.

In the end I bought the whole lot from a different retailer, didn't opt for their extended guarantee instead got it direct from Domestic & General. The total cost was still less that what JL would so.

Have two experiences:
1. About three years ago when plasma screens were new John Lewis were selling one for nearly £3000. A friend noticed that ALDI were selling the same model at £1800 - being in the same locality John Lewis matched the price.
2. Last Christmas I bought a 28 inch LCD for my daughter but when I put it in her room I realised that I should have bought a 32 inch so I boxed it all back up and asked to exchange it for a 32inch, obviously willing to pay the difference. They said if they did that they would knock 10% admin fee from the original price (£75 in fact). I thought it was a bit of a con but reluctantly accepted.
