Chaos!
ByTheCringe
08-11-2006
Last night, one of my Humaxes made a bog of recording a programme. It showed in the Recorded list with a sign which I believe means a bad recording, a yellow rectangle and a small circle I think.

The first indication was that today it had locked up, cured by a power cycle on the rear switch. I tried playing the bad recording. It started Ok, then eventually went blank with a message that the programme was encryted or not available, and then a hard disk drive error.

I deleted that programme. The only other thing recording last night was Holby, which I found had been given a Law and Order title and a date from August! Watched OK though.

I then noticed several programmes that had been watched and deleted, also from August, were back, but with zero length. I deleted them, which may have been a bad move. It now seems that some programmes are now OK to watch, but have wrong titles. Wee bit difficult to find anything now... Looks like i will have to watch everything as and when possible and then reormat. Is this behaviour known about (1.06 firmware, updated OTA.)

Looks like something similar to mfmf and a problem I had too: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=476224

What shall we call this bug? The C/C (confusion/chaos) bug?

We have had the same thing twice in the last month ... not formatted the machine yet as we can't be bothered and aer waiting for the new firmware so I can basically format and start afresh then.

Yes, son_t, it's the same as mfmf had. Thanks.

<It is listed as 32 minutes long in the recording list, but when I played it, the information panel shows it as 57 minutes, and it has about half an hour of an old, deleted recording tacked on the end.>

This bit rang bells. The programmes that had been watched and then reappeared had had this problem when being watched - certainly seemed to show longer recorded time than there actually was.

It's gonna be fun - not - finding things until I do a format...

The C/C bug tend to occur after a bad recording of some sort. It causes old recordings to be listed, it causes wrong info (like file sizes) to be displayed on recordings, it causes 'bad' recording icon to appear, it causes miss-titling of programmes, etc... any more

Here was my problem thread: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=359824

Isn't this problem a precursor to the lost recordings bug? Did you reformat your drive after upgrading to 1.00.06?

If programmes were recorded prior to you upgrading to 1.00.06, the old software could have put problems on the disk that are now beginning to propagate. 1.00.06 does not fix existing disk problems, but it does prevent new ones from happening.

You are quoting me, FenderBender...

I do hope not. This Humax was upgraded from purchase I think, but I can't swear to it. I didn't think a reformat was necessary at that time, but looking back I wish I had.

I have a Who Do You Think You Are recording (1 hour), correctly titled, but the first half is overwritten by a Trauma (30 minutes).

I have retitled a couple of mistitled progs - every feature on the Humax comes in handy sometime...

Maybe the bad recording could be due a signal/mux problem mentioned HERE

looks like this may have started the problems the Cringe is having?

I doubt that. Firstly, it is now obvious that some damage existed months ago. Secondly this is confined to one Humax, others are fine. Thirdly we look inland and don't suffer from much cross-channel interference. Thanks anyway.

Cheers, Northern Soul, I have since checked good reception on all channels in my list.

More symptoms:

1. Two recordings, both with the same, wrong name. Retitling one retitles both! Fun, innit!

2. Making a short (3 minute) recording starts, but never stops. Only power cycling at the rear switch stopped it. Tagged as a bad recording. Deleted successfully.

This exact same thing happened to me anout a month ago. It started with odd programmes apperaing that I hadnt recorded and then programmes that I had recorded were mistitled. Thensome days I would go to watch a recordning and it would be in the recordings list about 4 times. Sometimes the box would lock up when I tried to delete and had to be turned off and turned on again. The final straw was one day I went into the recorded programme list and everything had tripled - I had gone from 30 recordings to 90 - with everything recorded 3 times! When I tried to delete these the box locked up. I turned it off and back on again and everything had gone - the recorded programme list was blank. I wasnt too sad as nothing was that important. When I tried recording other things then they would come up as the previous recordings - ie Trinny & Susannah (I know!!) was the first thing I recorded after everything was wiped and when I played it and pressed the info button it said that the recording was nearly 3 hours long and was 'The English Patient' which I know was the first recording before all of the recordings were wiped. I then wiped everything and checked how much of the hard disk had been used and it said 93%! So I reformatted the hard disk and returned everything to factory settings. It is now recording everything as normal and the hard disk says only 1% has been used. The only thing that makes me think that I have not got rid of the problem completely is that when I go into the recorded programmes list it looks like there is another screen behind the one I can see (like having another window open in front of behind?) I cant say for sure that it has always been like this or not? It certainly sounds like the same problem I had. I tried the Humax forum but nobody could give me any advice - its nice (or maybe not!) to know that I am not going mad! Can anybody tell me whether they have two (ie, one on top of another) screens on the recorded programme list?

Thanks

Emma

Welcome to the forum, Emma D!

The double window effect is normal. Well, it's on my "funny" one and on another Humax. I think it's supposed to look as if the Recording Schedule is behind there.

I'm not going to try any more recording, just play back everything I can and do a format.

Hi Emma, can also confirm the double window effect is the norm.Hopefully your other problems are not as I've only had mine a week.
