18185 cost to mobiles has gone up

Anyone noticed that the cost of using 18185 to call mobiles has gone up?

I rang a mobile this evening, and the voice said 6p per minute. I'm sure it was 5p.

I'll check their website but I've not had any notification from them.

Just checked. Yes, it's gone up. Naughty of them not to tell anyone.

How come it only costs 0.5p perminute to call a mobile in the USA and 6p to a mobile over here?

Yes plus their line quality is getting worse,and they now operate minute billing.

Two reasons.

1. UK cellphone companies are greedy (if you are in any doubt about that, check out what the 'normal' call providers charge for a call to a '3' mobile *).

2. American cellphone users pay to receive calls (so callers are not charged).

* BT, for example, charges 22.67p/minute peak whereas, to call an ordinary mobile, it charges 13p/minute.

Yes, the cost went up to 6p/min around a week ago.

The higher termination costs for mobiles in the USA is paid by the person you are calling, so the caller pays the same rate to call a mobile as they do a landline, however the USA mobile owner has to cough up the difference, either out of inclusive minutes or 10 - 15c / min.

This is a reason why mobiles were slow to take off in the USA and people there were happy with pagers and a phone box, along with the patchy coverage.

OFCOM were thinking of switching to such a system, but many people are opposed to it, mobile users don't want to be charged to answer calls, or have to spend a lot more on a contract to get enough minutes to cover the amount of inclusive minutes needed.

Plus several countries that did have the USA system moved to the system we use. However there is no pressure any more on the mobile companies reducing the termination costs, the thought was switching to the USA method would bring in competition and the cost they would charge for incoming calls would be low, though I can't really see this happening, all I can see happening is keeping the costs high but bundle in a few more minutes and the PAYG customer will just have to fork out high costs to receive calls.
