LAME Ripper
Havelock Vetinari
11-11-2006
I tried to download it this morning, but I can't get it to install or run. As I'd like to re-rip my CD's and then convert them using LAME as I have read this is the best one around.

Also does anyone know if it is possible to turn MP3 tracks into audio without having to burn them to CD first?

Eh?

You've lost me here .... what are you trying to do?

Re-rip CD's then convert with LAME? To MP3's I assume .... you can install LAME and use it to encode MP3 within a ripping program. LAME isn't really a program itself.

Turn MP3 into audio? You mean WAV? A track on a CD is a WAV track .... but don't *have* to burn it .....

Indeed, it stands for LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder.

I was trying to convert my MP3 tracks to LAME recordings as they sound better. But I have yet to find a ripper where I can install it, and convert.

Pointless.

If they are already in MP3 format, re-encoding them with LAME isn't going to gain you anything.

You'd need to re-rip from the original source using LAME as the encoding engine. LAME is just a method of encoding MP3 .... it's still lossy. So, lossy format re-encoded with another lossy format = lossy-er end result. Pointless.

Here is a brilliant programme that will rip your CD's in pristine quality then you can install the LAME thingy and use it to do what you want.

I've been using it to make compilations of my CD's and it really is astounding, and it's free.

CDex does exactly the same and is also free.

Why not just use WMP/Itunes to rip your CDs? They have support between them for mp3, AAC and WMA at various codecs including lossless codecs they are also easy to use ripping wise, why bother with anything else?

WMP and Itunes are crap, probably.

I wouldn't go that far (although personally I really dislike ITunes) but my philosophy is that I'd rather use an application purely designed for the intended purpose, so to rip MP3s I use an MP3 ripper, not something which can do that on top of primarily being a media player. This is the same as my decision to use Word to produce documents instead of Wordpad which is built into Windows, and using a third party disk defragmenter instead of the one provided with the OS, and even using Firefox instead of a browser which is an integral part of the system. But hey - that's just me being quirky.

Yes it is, for a home user I don't see any particular advantage for you.

I use MY MP3pro-that supports LAME(embedded into software) encoding or FRAUNHOFER just select quality level, bit rate,VBR,CBR and away if goes--also supports mp3pro format as well where 128kbs files have the same quality as 256kbs standard mp3 but most hardware/software players don't support it, there is a pluggin for winamp though
also converts any file to different formats also

Why? Because WMP is s**t, and I wouldn't touch iTunes with 20 foot barge pole. Plus I don't have a zPod.

Whats wrong with Itunes??

Itunes 7 is a fab bit of software thats free, does a great job of burning to cd as well if you need to

Umm, did you read my post? I do not use iTunes because I don't have a zPod. Plus I do not like buggy programmes that tie you into their system. Plus the programme I use now to rip them sounds better than cruddy iTunes.

It's large, bloated, slow and insists on installing Quicktime at the same time.

Anyway ....

I've always used DBPowerAmp for music ripping/converting etc. It's not free any more but it's a damn fine piece of software.

you must have a crappy pc then, sounds greats on my machine and it's not sluggish what so ever
yer it installs quicktime which is crap, fair dos on that and yes it is on the large size but so what,300gb+ hd's are the standardish these days i don't see that as an issue
Anyway mp3pro is also very good but its a few years old now though

There is of course a LAME plug-in for iTunes (for Macs anyway). It means you can use the LAME method to produce mp3s at higher bit rates than iTunes normally encodes AAC files, and then decide that the AAC files sound better anyway.
