Just received an email from easymobile saying they are closing down.

I have quite a lot of credit on my SIMs with them, with all the bonuses I received too.

"If any top-ups you have made remain in your account at midnight (24:00) on 13th December 2006, we will fully re-fund you such amount, subject to any outstanding mobile telephone service charges which are due as at 20th December 2006 or on the closing of your account, which you will remain liable for. Details of the process for and calculation of such refund/outstanding amounts are contained in the attached document."

I have £160 left of bonuses, that won't be refunded

I've never had to top up myself.

Better start using the bonuses then.

Not another one, they closed easymoney.com the credit card and sold off all the cutomers to lloyds tsb! then turned easymoney into a links site listing credit card deals.

any suggestions on where to move to?

Low user at the moment. Fresh can close you down if your spend is less than £1.50 per month in any 3 times.
This would be no big deal but I like the free mobile number that I got that contains only 2 different digits (apart from the 07962 code)

I am not surprised by the close down. They got in on the act far to late to make any impression whatsoever. Especially as their prices were nothing special.
I would assume that a high percentage of easy users were low users too. High users tended to be no doubt lazy and loyal so never switched.

Sounds like you want Tesco Mobile in that case. Ask EasyMobile for a PAC code, give this to Tesco Mobile and you keep your number (but if they're closing in a month I'd get your skates on!)

Strange how Stelios seems to have limited success in every new venture except flights.

Just ordered a Fresh SIM. Will get a £6.50 refund from easyMobile plus a free SIM with £10 free credit on. Not bad at all.

He will have made LOTS of money selling the whole customer base to another provider.

Now he can use easymobile as a site with affiliate links to mobile deals and make more money.

I liked Easy Mobile because I'm a low user but also liked the facility of being able to use it abroad if I wanted to. Not sure about Fresh as I have never got on with the Car Phone Warehouse and Tesco Mobile, which would seem the nearest thing to Easy Mobile, won't allow you to use it abroad if you go for the Tesco Value option.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Go for the normal Tesco option then that allows use abroad.

I might try this Fresh Mobile and see what it's like. 15p call to ANY network is great, along with 5p texts. I was going to get T-Mobile soon with 12p calls to any network but texts are 10p, so will see how this goes for a while.

T-Mobile do free evening and weekend texts for £10 monthly minimum top up which you can have with the 12p any network calls tariff...

I got a text about 30 min ago and looking on their site something here's fishy.

Somethings not right. Either they withdrew or Easy pulled the plug on the association.

Makes me think there is more to this than meets the eye. Why sever a link that is bringing in 6 figure sums?

Suppose it's time to draw up a spreadsheet with the info on all the PAYG tariffs tomorrow so I can pick a new network.

Oh and one other point. I think they've switched the phones off, they're just ringing engaged. Ho hum, at least it's only my phone and not my house.

I think all quotes you posted are true, sounds like TDC were withdrawing from the UK Market, but then Easy dumped them totally, now TDC cannot use the brand name in Germany - They have a month to re-brand (callMobile).

Here's a link on cellular news - easyTelecom! lol I would have thought he'd have given it up as a bad job!!

Quote:
“Stelios: "I will make sure that TDC understand that they must treat the customers and the staff well and I am already putting a new service in place with a new partner under the easyTelecom.com brand."”

Do Fresh allow roaming? I can't find anything on their site about it.

It seems you have to make one call in 90 days before they disconnect you which isn't too bad.

The one thing I liked about EasyMobile (apart from the price) was not having to actually do anything to top up - I'd only ever had pay monthly phones before as I can't bear the thought of running out of credit when I most need it, and it was the automatic top-up service that lured me to Easymobile. A quick look at the main providers has so far failed to find another company that does the same thing. Topping up online or by text isn't good enough, I just want to pick up my phone and dial whenever I want to, I am completely unorganised and have the worst memory in the world so I don't want to be messing about with topups.

It takes alot of memory and effort to take an etopup card into a shop and say '£5 please'' does it

Well the simple answer would be to return to pay monthly, no?

I also use Virgin. You can be on their PAYG tariff, but pay by direct debit. If you make no calls, then you don't pay anything, if you do make calls these are charged at the PAYG rates and every 3 months you receive a bill and the amount is collected by DD. Ideal, I like this system. Also with Virgin if you do pay by DD then the charges when roaming are lower than if you are a top-up user.

I don't like top-ups either. I used to be on contract, as when I first had a phone, PAYG was several years away, but not having to worry about topping up and the hassle of topping up was what kept me with a contract service, plus my company would pay for my line rental, when I changed jobs I still kept a contract as I didn't like top ups, but when Virgin came along and allowed you to have a PAYG tariff but pay for it by DD I switched to them.

Things haven't been going that well for Easy*****

easyCar
In April 2000 the company set-up the car rental company easyRentacar (later renamed easyCar) which the only rental car available from them was the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The car rental business, which suffered from financial losses and a reputation for poor service has since closed, but easyCar continues operating as a rental broker via the internet.

easyMoney
On 21 August 2001, the credit card company, easyMoney was set up with Accucard (now part of Lloyds TSB), which was expanded on 14th February 2005 with the announcement that unbundled car insurance products provided by Zurich would be sold later in the year at easyMoney insurance. In April 2006, easyGroup linked with moneysupermarket.com to provide a financial product comparison website. This coincided with the withdrawal of the easyMoney credit card.

easyWatch - a Swatch-style range of watches made by Zeon. On launching easyWatch Sir Stelios claimed to be filling the void left by the highly collectable Swatch brand. easyWatches are typically orange and have a large easyWatch logo prominently displayed, which watch collectors say makes them look like a free corporate giveaway rather than a desirable or collectable product. easyWatch immediately managed to infringe a number of trademarks by giving its watches names like Portafino. Sir Stelios claimed that no-one could confuse one of his watches with a genuine Portafino and expressed surprise that a company would take legal action for use of a registered trademark

easyTelecom – References to a proposed fixed-line telephone provider have been delisted from the easyGroup website

easyCinema
On 23 May 2003, the cinema company, easyCinema at the Point cinema in Milton Keynes was opened at a former UCI site, offering screenings from 20p if booked well in advance. The cinema initially struggled as major distributors were not prepared release new films to the company using the yield-management model.

First run films later became available, but at fixed prices. The cinema also relented on not serving popcorn and drinks (claimed to save on cleaning costs).

Towards the end of its life, the cinema site also housed an easyInternetcafé and was a pick-up point for easyPizza. However, following a dispute over unpaid rent with the landord, Odeon, which resulted in eviction, the easyCinema closed in May 2006 and reopened as an Odeon cinema.

The closure of easyCinema appears to have curtailed the desired expansion into London's West End.

easyBus
easyBus began operating on 30 July 2004. The company currently offers a low cost express minibus service between London and Luton Airport. Journeys can be booked via the easyBus website, or customers can purchase a more expensive walk-on fare. A service from London to the former Milton Keynes easyCinema has ceased operation.

In July 2006 easyBus announced a £3 million expansion to provide transfer services from UK airports including Manchester, Liverpool, Gatwick and Stansted to city centres

Long-distance rival Megabus has been more successful

easy4men
On 9th December 2004, the men's toiletries range easy4men was launched together with Boots. Originally conceived to challenge Gilette, the product line did not include a razor[8]. After disappointing sales the partnership with Boots is being dissolved in 2006.

easyMusic
easyMusic, in conjunction with Wippit, began operation on 22 December 2004, with copyrighted music downloads offered from 25p, although minimum transaction value is £1 and there are charges for using credit cards and SMS payment methods. A proposed copyleft section of easyMusic never materialised.

Now easyMobile.

Does anyone know if the Fresh mobile network uses T Mobile? It's one of only two networks that work where we live. I got the children's phones from easy because they were good value (basic Nokia 1600 phone plus £30 credit, all for £34.95 - so essentially the phones cost a fiver each); if Fresh don't work in the village I'll have to see if I can port them to T Mobile I guess. Bloody pain though.
