I am researching which LCD TV to buy. I currently have a Toshiba 32" CRT TV with built in amp and dolby surround.......

Buying a new LCD set will mean I have lost the dolby surroung so will need to get a amp/reciever to connect to the new TV for genuine surround sound.

Please bear with me as I am out of touch with the new audio vision technoligies. I am considering a Toshibe 37" LCD with 3 HDMI inputs and two scarts. The model number is 37WLT68

My question is that this particular set does not seem to have normal audio out L,R , phono connectors which I would need to connect to a surround system amp/Reciever

It does have the following audio connector of which I don't understand. Which is..........

"Digital" audio output socket which it says enables the connection of a "suitable surround system". What do they mean by "suitable". Will a dolby surround sound reciver have a digital input for the TV digital audio output.......

It's the "digital" audio output choice that is confusing me. All i want is to feed the normal stereo audio signals from the TV in to a surround sound amplifier system.....

Sorry about my ignorance but I just don't know if this TV reciever can be connected to my suggested set up.......Advise please......

It has a SPDIF (TOS link) output which will carry any of the audio formats that are broadcast on analogue or digital. The optical connection would connect to your amplifier in the same way twin RCA phonos would and should provide better sound quality as well.

...and it also has standard RCA phono stereo output as well. You would only use the optical output (presumably) to transfer DD sound fed to your TV from Sky HD via HDMI back out from the TV to your amp. Why not just connect your Sky HD box direct to your amp via optical out, rather than feeding it from Sky to your new TV, then from your TV to your amp? I always thought the most direct route would be susceptible to least interference.

Thank's guys.. broadz. I down loaded the manual for the TV specified and could not find in its specifications the RCA stereo output jacks you mention. Other Toshiba sets including a 37"does. Just been to my local Comet store to take a look but unfortunately they don't have the model with 3 HDMI inputs on display so cannot verify what the manual indicates.

Getting information from retailers is a nightmare!!! An alternative Toshibe set I am interested is on display in Comet model 37WLT66 with only two HDMI inputs.

I have down loaded the manual to this set also which does have standard audio output. However unlike the other sets it appears not to have the ability to freeze the broadcast picture as do the other models.

I said to the assistant in Comet it may be an oversight in the manual so could you please check for me with the set remote control and find out there and then. Easy task you might thinkl!!! Alas no. They had not or would not produce any remote control for any set on the bases that they keep losing them.

Where does that leave the customer that wants a simple basic demonstaration of functions.....It leaves them having to ask basic questions on such forums....How things have changed since I last went on a TV purchase spree....

I checked the review on Amazon - scroll down to the connections section. It says that it has 1 x variable audio output ( RCA phono ) - rear.

Malcolm, I've got the 32WLT66, and that's definitely got freeze picture on it. I can't imagine they wouldn't have included it on the 37, I'm sure the only difference between the two is the screen size. It's not that useful a feature though, the programme continues in the background, and there's no fast forward or rewind or slo-mo frame advancing. It's not like a proper pause facility on a PVR or Sky Plus or a DVD. A far more useful feature is the ability to jump back to the previous channel that you were watching without having to key its channel number in.

I have a Toshiba CRT at the moment and I find its freeze picture usefull for catching phone numbers or addresses that may be of interest so personally I would miss that little ability.

Yes the manual for the 32" does say it can freeze picture. Alas the 37" model mentioned the manual does not have the freeze picture function. I know from the days of VHS recorders changing models that manufacturers make strange decisions as to what is left on or off a particular model. So i would not take for granted that it is there.

My local Comet with the exact model on show could have given me the answer if they had come up with a remote control.......Alas the retailer co-operation seems so lacking these days more so than ever....
