DVD-A versus SA-CD
Just seen DVD-A (Audio) discs for sale in my local MVC. It's taken a hell of a time to see this format on the High Street, as it's been around for at least 3 years, but it's progress.
My main concern, before investing in a DVD-A player (n.b. ordinary Digital Versatile Disc players will play DVD-A discs, but not with high-end audiophile quality), is which format will survive, i.e. DVD-A or SA-CD (aka. VHS vs. Betamax). Any thoughts? I have only heard DVD-A, which is superb (main advantage is the bit rate is higher than CD, and sound is in DTS or Dolby 51), but cannot make any comparsions. |

Get yourself a Pioneer 656a - available multi region for around £350. This handles both DVDA and SACD.
I've got a handful of discs and to my ears there is no difference between SACD and DVDA, although you'd need the same material on each format derived from the same master to be able to make a true comparison. To be honest such debates are akin to the dts/DD ones, and about as boring as well! Got the REM Automatic for the People DVDA last week - fantastic quality! Make sure you listen via the six phono inputs on your amp however, otherwise you'll get DD or dts which arent as good. |
