VH1 have compiled a list of the 100 best selling albums of all time in the UK. The top ten are listed on the BBC website ... apparently Chris Moyles was going through it on the radio as well.

Does anyone have a link to the full list of 100?

Could'nt see any obvious link to it on the VH1 site ......

Ah, I didn't realise it hadn't been aired yet.

The scary bit was that The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Bob Dylan and (who cares) Sting don't have a single entry in the top 100 but Jason Donovan does! (at number 100 .... but he's still in there)

Oh dear.

I'm surprised Tubular Bells is so low down - wasn't it more or less compulsory for everyone in the 1970s to own a copy?

And Oasis are remarkably high - Whats The Story Morning Glory may have been a decade-definining album but I can't believe it outsold the Floyd and ABBA. Makes me wonder if VH1 got their sums right.

I can't see the Stones not getting into the top 100 to be honest, seems strange.

Also wasn't Bat Out Of Hell in the album chart for years, i thought it would be higher.

This year is pretty crap for big selling albums, although Arctic Monkeys are still number one so far for 2006, they are nowhere near that list.

I suspect that, even without my Beatles-bias cap on, that they've (VH1) added Queens Greatest Hits compilations up incorrectly and duplicated sales of Greatest Hits 1, 2 & 3. This album has never been a "contender" for top selling album till all of a sudden VH1 come out with these figures. No other recent survey has suggested these results.

It's slightly annoying, as the "poor" fab fours achievements are misrepresented or ignored, and Queen seem to get far more attention in Britain from the media as being more successful in many ways. The fact is that the Beatles have sold a record 40m albums in Britain, compared to 15m by Queen, and the Beatles have spent a record 175 weeks at #1 in the album charts, compared to about 20 weeks for Queen. Elvis only spent about 60 weeks, and he is the second most successful.

Oh, and the Beatles actually wrote great albums! Queen produced dated camp-rock!

Yes, i'm pished off!

The reason why Queen Greatest Hits isn't included in many "Best Album" polls is because Greatest Hits albums are usually discounted as they're not an album as such but a compliation of best bits off of other albums.

But as for units, I guess Greatest Hits I has shifted more copies than any other album.

Not "best of" polls, but actual "biggest selling album" lists.

Queens Greatest Hits 1 in most of these lists appears at #8. Even on the BPI's website, last updated July 2006 its down at #8 behind Simply Red. Greatest Hits 2 appears at #28 and Greatest Hits 3 isn't anywhere to be seen.

www.bpi.co.uk - i would have thought they would have far more authority than VH1.

i might be a bit contraversial here...

but IMO the media overstate how big the stones are.

sure, they are a 'big' band, who sell out many concerts...

but i just dont think they are a "mega" artist in the way that queen, the beatles, madonna, elvis, michael jackson are/were.

they havent had a decent song for decades for starters

not slagging them off too much, as i like several of their songs..its just that the media seem to go crazy over Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and sometimes overstate the level of interest in them (IMO of course)

Perhaps, and the 60s and early 70s was the bulk of their quality material.....however, they are reasonably huge:

Rolling Stones in USA are certified for 65.5m albums sold, against say Queen who are "only" at 32.5m.

Worldwide, The Rolling Stones have outsold Queen as well.

No wonder - It's bloody awful. How they can call that a "Greatest Hits" I don't know.

I don't really understand this one though. Do they count just how many units the first disk has sold, or do they count only how many the 2 disk compilation has sold, or the 3 disk, or do they count them all, and add them all up?

I was surprised how far down Tubular Bells was too!

Is this just CDs were talking about here too, or are LPs and Cassettes included too?

Interesting and quite nice to see Dire Straits so high up too.
Not a "mega" artist either really, but obviously very very popular.

i agree about greatest hits 3, its shocking in comparison to the first two.

i also wonder if theyve got muddled up...as ive never heard of queens greatest hits ever being so high before.

maybe theyve included all the 'gold collections' 'platinum collections' etc that queen have released which have included more than just greatest hits itself.

Thanks, yeah those were the ones I meant to say instead of all that "2 disk, 3 disk" nonsense.

Gold = Disk 1 & 2
Platinum = Disk 1, 2 & 3.

I mean the third disk only really contains covers, remixes (of songs already on the first two), a few Freddie songs and a few Brian songs (probably the only slightly redeeming feature).

Some of that is pretty dodgy. I mean how has James Blunt's album reached number 19?

Thats got to be wrong because Sign of the Times and Purple Rain by prince are not there

There is something wrong with the population if 10 Good Reasons by Jason Donavan has sold more records

That list seems strange to me as well. Classic albums by the likes of Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys have had 30-40 years to sell but aren't in the top 100?.....and where's Elvis?

It just shows that numbers like this are meaningless. Maroon 5 anyone?.....thought not .

Would be more informative maybe if the original release date was also listed at the side of each entry. BTW, I have a feeling these may be only CD sales?

Depeche Mode have sold 73 million albums world wide so I was surprised 1 wasn't on the list. Then again they are more or less ignored over here
